Serving Game Clicks in Four-Set Volleyball Win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Jordan Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.) registered a double-double and five service aces in a four-set victory by the Navy (7-7, 4-1) volleyball team over Lafayette (4-8, 1-4), Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.  The Mids posted a 25-10, 24-26, 25-14, 25-13 victory over the Leopards.

"I am really proud of this team's performance tonight," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "Exam week can be a challenge, but our practices were solid this week and that really paid dividends with the performance of our defense and transition offense."

Set One
Navy slowly built some separation from Lafayette as the Mids turned a 7-5 lead into a 17-7 advantage.

Jamie Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.) had five kills in the set to help the Mids to a comfortable hitting percentage advantage of .323-(-).129.

Set Two
The frame saw the score tied 17 times and the lead change hands six times.  The score was tied at 15, 17, 18 and 19 before Navy scored back-to-back points on kills.  Lafayette responded with consecutive points to tie the set again at 21.  A service error by the Leopards gave the Mids the lead (22-21) and the serve, but the visitors tied the set again with a kill, then took a 23-22 lead on an ace.

Jordan Llewellyn tied the set again with a kill, but Lafayette tallied a kill of its own to reach set point with a 24-23 lead.  A kill by Jamie Llewellyn erased that chance and tied the score again.  Lafayette registered a kill to sideout and serve for the stanza a second time.  The Leopards converted the opportunity on a kill.

Lafayette's hitting percentage bounced back dramatically from set one as the Leopards hit .481 on 14 kills and just one error on 27 attempts in the second set.  That bettered the .167 (13-7-36) posted by the Mids.

Set Three
Navy raced out to a 7-2 lead at the start of the set.  Lafayette was able to draw to within two points at 10-8, 11-9 and 12-10.  A Lafayette service error gave the Mids a 13-10 lead.  Navy would double the advantage to 16-10 on a pair of kills from Maggie Bodman (Jr., Northbrook, Ill.) sandwiched around a kill by Jamie Llewellyn.

It soon was an 18-14 Navy lead before the Mids scored the ensuing seven points to win the set and take a 2-1 advantage.

Jamie Llewellyn accounted for five kills in the set and Bodman had four kills on five attempts.  Those efforts helped Navy post a .464 attack percentage.  Defensively, the Mids did not have a block in the set but still limited Lafayette to a .000 hitting percentage (five kills, five errors, 26 attempts) thanks to holding a 13-4 lead in digs.

Set Four
Another good start placed Navy ahead by the score of 5-1.  Jordan Llewellyn began the set with an ace and Hannah Hoover (So., Katy, Texas) had an ace of her own during that early run.  Lafayette made the score 6-4, then a 5-0 run by Navy pushed the Mids to an 11-4 advantage.  Jordan Llewellyn had two kills during that span.

Lafayette was able to make it a four-point margin at 15-11, but Navy scored four of the next five points to build a cushion that carried the Mids through to the end of the set and the match.

Statistical Summary
Navy held an 11-5 edge in aces and committed just one more service error than Lafayette (8-7).  The 11 aces tied the team high this season and Jordan Llewellyn tied her twin sister for the most by the Mids in a match this year.

Navy also doubled the number of kills Lafayette had, 60-30, to hold a .331-.109 advantage in hitting percentage.  Both teams registered 18 attack errors and each had six blocks, but the Mids held a 57-38 edge in digs.

Jordan Llewellyn finished the night with 12 kills and two blocks to go along with her 10 digs and five aces.  Jamie Llewellyn totaled a team-high 17 kills and Bodman tallied 15 kills and just one attack error on 22 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage.  Hoover snared a match-best 19 digs and dropped in three aces of her own.  Setter Averi Miller (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) did another nice job of running the offense as she finished with 48 assists and also amassed seven digs and six kills.

"Hannah had a great night," said Labrador.  "She was really locked in from the service line and played a smart match defensively.

"I liked how poised yet terminal our hitters were today.  Averi made some great decisions and the hitters were executing the game plan well."
