Cross Country Continues Season at Spiked Shoe Invitational

The women’s 6K begins at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s 5.2-mile run at 10:45 a.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's and women's cross country teams return to action Friday morning as the Midshipmen take part in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at the Penn State Golf Course in University Park, Pa. The women's 6K race begins at 10:00 a.m. with the men's 5.2-mile run starting at 10:45 a.m.
 
Last weekend, the Midshipmen opened the 2022 season sweeping the Salisbury Fall Classic on Saturday, Sept. 3 Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Md. On the women's side, five of the Mids' top seven runners finished in the top 10 in the 6K meet, including the individual medalist. The men's team placed four runners in the top 10 with an additional competitor in the top 20 to tally 46 points to win.

Pair of Cross Country Freshmen Earn Weekly Accolades
A pair of Navy cross country freshmen earned weekly honors on Tuesday for their efforts at the Salisbury Fall Classic. Sophie Compton (San Diego, Calif.) was named Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week, presented by Northrop Grumman, while Justin Mumford (New Baden, Ill.) was tabbed Patriot League Men's Rookie of the Week.
 
Compton won individual medalist honors in her first collegiate meet, helping the Navy women's cross country team to a decisive victory at the 2022 Salisbury Fall Classic. Led by Compton, the Mids tallied a team-low score of 22 points to finish 19 points ahead of the second-place team. The freshmen's time of 22:52.5 in the 6K race paced the Navy team that placed six of its top seven runners in the top 10.
 
Mumford placed fourth as an individual in the Salisbury Fall Classic in his first collegiate meet, helping Navy to a team victory. He led the Mids with a time of 25:28.4 in the 8K race, finishing 16.5 seconds faster than the next Navy runner. Mumford helped lead the Mids to a winning low score of 46 total points, winning the meet by seven points over the second-place team.
 
Last Time Out (MEN):
The Navy men's cross country team placed four runners in the top 10 with an additional competitor in the top 20 to tally 46 points to win the Salisbury Fall Classic. Freshman Justin Mumford (New Baden, Ill.) paced the squad in the 8K meet with a fourth-place finish (25:28.4), while fellow rookie Jackson Nguyen (Huntsville, Ala.) took fifth (25:44.9). Matt Newell (Columbus, Ind.) and Evan Prince (Rabun Gap, Ga.) finished eighth (25:58.9) and ninth (26:07.9), respectively, while Travis Hockin rounded out the scoring in 20th (26:43.5).
 
Andre Faigal (Hainesport, N.J.) and Alex Dachos (King George, Va.) finished 21st (26:49.4) and 31st (27:21.5) to close out Navy's top seven competitors.
 
Navy claimed first place among the seven teams with a low score of 46 points. Rowan was second with 53 points, while Messiah was third with 76. Meet host Salisbury came in fourth (83 points).
 
Last Time Out (WOMEN):
Navy women's cross country opened the 2022 campaign with an impressive victory at the Salisbury Fall Classic at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Md. Five of the Midshipmen's top seven runners finished in the top 10 in the 6K meet, including freshman Sophie Compton (San Diego, Calif.) who was the individual medalist.
 
Navy claimed first place of the nine teams competing with a low score of 22 points ahead of Kutztown who came in second with 41 points. Meet host Salisbury was third with 115 points.
 
Competing in her first collegiate competition, Compton took the gold with a first-place finish with a time of 22:52.5. Lauren Moore (Danbury, Conn.) was a tenth of a second behind Compton for second with a time of 22:52.6. Katherine Leddy (Crofton, Md.), Katelyn Pepin (Manchester, N.H.), and Charlene Huang (Brentwood, Tenn.) rounded out Navy's top five in fourth, sixth, and ninth, respectively. Leddy clocked a time of 22:54.0, while Pepin was just off the pace with 23:04.9 and Huang crossed the finish line in 23:09.1.
 
Anna Cherian (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Lily Williams (Ridgewood, N.J.) closed out the Mids' top seven competitors, finishing 10th (23:12.7) and 15th (23:16.5).
