HANOVER, N.H. -- The Navy men's tennis team opened its 2023 spring slate with a pair of losses to Dartmouth, Saturday at the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, N.H. The Big Green (2-0) defeated the Mids (0-2) by scores of 5-2 and 7-0.
Navy had its chances in the first match. The Mids won the doubles point from the Big Green to take an early 1-0 lead. After Dartmouth won the No. 3 match, the Mids evened the proceedings at 1-1 when
Luke Garner (So., Arnold, Md.) and
Sasha Panyan (Jr., Lutherville, Md.) combined for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Carlos Guerrero Alvarez and Waleed Qadir. The Mids earned the point when their No. 2 tandem of
Aniketh Ayinala (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) and
Gavin Segraves (Sr., Charlottesville, Va.) defeated Alex Knox-Jones and Henry Ren in a tiebreaker (7-3).
Navy's second point of the match was posted by Panyan as he won a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) decision over Alvarez at the No. 1 flight. Losing a close match for the Mids at No. 5 singles was
Nathan Nguyen (Fr., McLean, Va.) as he fell, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), to Knox-Jones.
The lineups changed slightly for both teams in the second match, which saw Dartmouth win each of the three doubles matches followed by six straight-set singles matches.
Navy will open its home season Saturday when it plays host to St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis U. at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
