ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team will wrap up its fall racing schedule with action this Saturday afternoon at the 2023 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The Mids will have the majority of its roster seeing time on the Schuylkill as six different crews are entered in competitions starting with one Navy crew in the Men's Collegiate Freshmen Eights event at 12:30 p.m. The races on Saturday will be held on a 2.5-mile course near Fairmount Park with a view of the historic Boathouse Row. Rowers from 275 different clubs or institutions are scheduled to participate in the two-day event that began in 1970 as an idea by 1960 Olympian and former Navy rower Lyman Perry (USNA '60), Jay Pattison III, and Raul Betancourt for a new fall race. The action in Philadelphia will have a live video feed and results provided by the race organizers.
After Navy's freshmen eight crew kicks off the competition at 12:30 p.m., the Mids will have three crews heading out down the Schuylkill in the Men's Club Championship Eights contest at 2:15 p.m. before the programs' top-two crews will round out the day of racing as combatants in the Men's Championship Eights event at 4:05 p.m.
Last year at the 2022 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, the future of Navy's heavyweight rowing program was on display. Entered in a pair of events, the freshmen fours and freshmen eights, the Mids recorded five top-four results, including a win by the Navy A boat in the freshmen eights contest.
Saturday is the final fall regatta for the program as the Mids will next turn their attention to the spring 2024 campaign.
