The 25th-ranked Navy squash team (7-2) saw its six-match winning streak come to an end over the weekend, dropping a 9-0 decision to top-ranked Penn (6-0) at the Penn Squash Center. The Mids, however, regrouped and less than 24 hours upset No. 22 Bates (0-2) 7-2, also played on Penn's home courts.
Weekend Highlights
• While Penn earned the shutout over the Mids, Navy's
Alexander Orr (So / Haverford, Pa.) put forth a solid performance at the No. 5 position. Orr took the opening game 12-10 and held a 9-6 advantage in game 2, but Dana Santry rallied to take the game 11-9 and it would propel him to earn a 3-1 victory in the match
.
• A year ago, Navy played what would be its first of 21-consecutive matches a player down against Bates. This year, the tables were turned as the Bobcats played Sunday's match against the Mids with just 8 players
• The Mids dominated the lower half of the ladder, winning the No. 5-8 positions and tacking on the forfeit at No. 9.
• Navy jumped out to a 2-1 advantage with the opening shift, as Orr scored his second win of the week following a 3-0 sweep over Bates' Maksymilian Celm (11-7, 11-1, 11-4) at No. 5. Additionally,
Ramsay Killinger (Fr / Wyndmoor, Pa.) earned a 3-0 win against Bates' Gus Silverman (11-2, 11-3, 11-2) at No. 8.
• The Mids clinched the team victory over the next shift with
Lucas Spiro (Jr / Buffalo, N.Y.),
Tighe Mullarkey (Fr, So / Locust Valley, N.Y.) and
Sean Wu (Fr / Princeton, N.J.) earning victories at the No. 3, 6 and 7 positions.
• Spiro jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Labeeb Ali, but Ali fought back to take game three by an 11-7 count. Spiro, however, earned his sixth win of the season by taking game four 11-4.
• Like Spiro, Mullarkey held a 2-0 advantage in his match before Harris Ramlee took game three 11-6. Mullarkey would not be denied, taking game four 11-5.
• Wu, meanwhile, swept Theodore Koenigsbauer in three games.
• Navy split the final two matches of the day with team captain
Henry Sparkman (Sr / Darien, Conn.) beating Ashton Monteiro in three games (11-5, 11-5, 11-9) at the No. 2 position, while
Matthew Kang (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) was dealt a 3-1 setback by Bates' Nicolai Brandstadmoe Boe at No. 4.
