SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Wayne McKinney was 10-10 from the foul line in the last 69 seconds of the game to help San Diego (4-1) fend off the Navy men's basketball team (0-4), 67-59, Monday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.
An entertaining first half that saw four ties, five lead changes and neither team hold more than a four-point lead end with the Mids in front, 31-30. The Toreros shot 50 percent from the field to better the 40 percent posted by the Mids, but Navy was 5-6 from the foul line and San Diego was 0-1 from the charity stripe.
The Mids had a good start to the second half as they jumped in front, 38-32. The offense slowed at that point, however, as Navy made just one field goal in almost nine minutes to allow San Diego to go on a 13-4 run and regain a 45-42 lead with nine minutes left to play. A Jack Medale basket drew the Mids to within one point at 45-44, but the Toreros scored each of the next four and 10 of the next 12 points to jump in front, 55-46, with 3:19 left on the clock.
Navy chipped away at the deficit and a three-point basket by
Mac MacDonald followed by a pair of free throws from
Kam Summers made it a 57-56 USD lead with 1:40 still to play.
The Toreros called timeout in front of their bench with 1:24 on the game clock and 15 seconds showing on the shot clock. When play resumed, the Navy defense forced USD into a baseline three-point shot that missed the mark as the shot clock expired. However, just before the buzzer sounded a off-the-ball foul was called on the Mids. That sent McKinney to the foul line with 1:09 showing on the clock. He made both attempts to stretch the lead to 59-56.
Mike Woods, who set career highs with 14 points and eight rebounds, missed a shot from inside of the lane on the ensuing Navy possession. Teammate
Donovan Draper grabbed the errant shot and was fouled with 45.5 seconds left. He missed both attempts, which led to the Mids having to foul McKinney with 42.8 seconds left.
Following the two makes (61-56) by McKinney,
Austin Benigni drained a three-point shot and Navy called its final timeout with 36.5 seconds left while trailing, 61-58. Five seconds after play resumed, McKinney was fouled for a third time. He made it a two-possession game (63-58) with 31.6 seconds remaining.
A missed triple by MacDonald was grabbed by McKinney who again was fouled. He pushed the margin to 65-58 with 23.2 seconds still showing on the clock. Draper was fouled after grabbing an offensive board and he made one of two foul shots to make the score 65-59 with 16.5 seconds left. The Toreros then gave the ball to McKinney, who was fouled with 13.2 seconds remaining. He closed out the scoring with two more free throws.
McKinney's five trips to the charity stripe began with the Toreros leading by one, three, three, five and six points, respectively.
Navy shot 25.7 percent from the floor in the second half and 32.3 percent for the game. San Diego made 39.1 percent of its second-half shots and 45.1 percent of its field goal attempts for the game. Helping those figures was San Diego holding an 11-1 advantage in blocked shots.
The Toreros were 19-23 (82.6%) from the foul line for the game, including a 19-22 (86.4%) effort in the second half. Conversely, the Mids were 13-19 (68.4%) from the charity stripe in the game and 8-13 (61.5%) after halftime.
Benigni shared the Navy scoring lead with 14 points and added a game-high five assists. Draper contributed nine points and seven boards in just 14 minutes of playing time.
Navy will be off from games until it plays host to VMI on Nov. 29.
