Bench Rallies Colgate Past Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Wholesale lineup changes after set two sparked Colgate to a five-set victory over the Navy volleyball team, Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.  The Raiders (18-7, 11-3) rallied for a 16-25, 9-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-5 win over the Mids (14-8, 6-7).

"Colgate had some non-starters really step up tonight," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "That was the difference in the match.

"We have everything we need to play at the level of the top team in the league.  The key is staying in the fight longer.  We will continue to work on our ability to evolve during a match, especially when teams heat up offensively.  We played hard and I am proud of the effort."

Set One
Navy broke away from Colgate when it turned a 12-8 lead into a 19-11 advantage.

Set Two
Navy scored the first six points of the frame and quickly built a 12-2 lead on its way to the win.

Set Three
Navy was hitting .392 (25 kills, 5 attack errors) and had totaled seven aces and five blocks through the second set.  Conversely, Colgate was hitting .038 (13 kills, 11 attack errors) and had posted two aces and one block after the second set.

Colgate had four players who had not started the match, including three who had not started in either the first or second set and two who had not yet played this evening, on the court at the beginning of set three.

The score was tied at 11-11 when Colgate started to inch away from Navy by taking a 17-12 lead.  The Mids were able to close to within two points at 19-17 but the Raiders scored the ensuing four points.

Set Four
This set looked for awhile as it would be the second set in reverse as the Raiders built leads of 12-6 and 17-10.  Navy crept back into the set at 18-15 only to see Colgate build a 23-17 advantage.  The Mids had an answer and soon closed to within one point at 23-22.  The Raiders won the ensuing two points to force a fifth set.

Set Five
Colgate held a 5-4 lead but quickly stretched it to a 12-4 advantage.

The Raiders hit .526 (11 kills, 1 error) in the fifth set and the Mids hit .091 (4 kills, 2 errors).

Statistical Notes
Colgate amassed a .347 hitting percentage (42 kills, 9 errors), three aces and nine blocks in the last three sets.  Meanwhile, Navy totaled a .131 hitting effort (28 kills, 14 errors), one ace and one block in the same span.

Jordan Llewellyn totaled 21 kills on 55 swings and hit .309.  She was the lone Mid to reach double figures in kills.  Hannah Hoover recorded five aces and a team-high 16 digs in the match.

"We needed Jordan to take a ton of swings tonight and she really carried us offensively," said Labrador.
