Rifle Posts School-Record Performance at President’s Trophy Match to Finish Second

Navy recorded a school-record 5856 to finish second in the four-team match.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Navy rifle team (4-6) shot a school-record performance, 5856, to finish second against its service academy counterparts on Saturday at the President's Trophy Match that was held at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, N.Y. Additionally, the Midshipmen shot an NCAA four-count score of 4697 points.

"We had a decent day at West Point today against Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard," head coach Mike Anti said. "Our team score was just a couple of points under our average but had a couple of good individual performances which helped us beat Army. Army had a program record score so we needed a few standouts to beat them. Isabella Baldwin led the team in both events and won the competition smallbore event. Marleigh Duncan also had a very solid performance in smallbore shooting a 585, second highest on the team and tied for third in the match. Our other freshman, Ryan Wee had a great day with personal best in both smallbore and air rifle.

"Overall, I am pleased with the team's performance especially in the sling positions (prone and kneeling)," Anti added. "We still have some work to do in standing and air but they are all capable of improving in that area."

Scoring for the overall President's Trophy Match features eight starters at most for each team in smallbore and air rifle with the top five scores counting toward each team's final score. The NCAA scoring of starting five shooters in each event with the top four scores counting will still be used for NCAA qualification purposes.

Air Force (4-2) won its 10th-straight President's Trophy Match after posting a collective score of 5892 points, finishing ahead of Navy (5856). Match-host Army (5-2) was third with 5853, while Coast Guard rounded out the team scores with 5118.

Navy tallied 4697 points according to the NCAA scoring, while Air Force finished with 4716. Army was third with 4692 and Coast Guard closed out the scoring with 4277 points.
