The 25th-ranked Navy squash team (8-2) put together a hard-fought, gritty performance Friday evening to overcome not only being short-handed, but a shift in the entire ladder. The Mids faced an early deficit playing without their No. 1 player, however, Navy battled through and secured a 6-3 victory over #28 Wesleyan (2-2) in a neutral site match played at Squash on Fire in Washington, D.C.

Lucas Spiro (Jr / Buffalo, N.Y.) became the third active player on Navy's roster to reach the 40-career wins milestone with his 3-1 triumph over Wesleyan senior Toby Goldston at #2 ... Spiro cruised to an 11-3 win in the opening game, but Goldston, who came into the match undefeated (3-0), pushed Spiro who would win game two 13-11 ... Goldston went on to take game three 11-8, before Spiro sealed the win in the fourth by another close decision, 14-12

Matthew Kang (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) scored a 3-1 win at #3 against fellow rookie Dhairya Shah of Wesleyan ... Kang took game one 11-9, while Shah answered with an 11-9 win of his own ... Kang went on to outlast Shah 11-8 and 11-9 to take the match

Alexander Orr (So / Haverford, Pa.) also recorded a milestone win, his 30th in just over a year (30-13) ... Orr swept Wesleyan junior Preston Crawford in 3 games (11-6, 13-11, 11-3) at #4

Tighe Mullarkey (Fr, So / Locust Valley, N.Y.) also captured a 3-0 victory in his win at #5 against Wesleyan junior Jack Lungstrum (11-8, 14-12, 11-8)

Sean Wu (Fr / Princeton, N.J.), one of five players on the team with 7 wins this season, topped junior Morgan Shatzman at #6 ... Wu jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Shatzman edged the Navy rookie in game 3, 13-11 ... Wu kept his composure and came back to close out the match in game four, 11-9

Ramsay Killinger (Fr / Wyndmoor, Pa.) collected his team-leading eighth victory of the year when he dealt senior Cole Zetterquist a 3-0 loss at #7 ... Killinger played like a veteran, holding off the Wesleyan veteran in each of the first two games, 14-12 and 15-13 ... Killinger used that momentum to roll through game 3, 11-1

Henry Sparkman (Sr / Darien, Conn.) succumbed to Nimai Kini at #1, but played his undefeated Wesleyan foe tough ... Sparkman jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match, but Kini earned back-to-back narrow victories (11-8 and 11-9) to pull even going into the fifth game ... Kini took the final match of the evening with an 11-5 win in game 5
What's Ahead
• The Mids will play their final match before the semester break when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to battle Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference foe #16 MIT (6-5) on Sunday morning
• MIT dropped a 9-0 decision to #8 Virginia on Friday afternoon and will play #10 Dartmouth in Charlottesville on Saturday morning
• The Navy-MIT match will be played on Sunday at 10:00 am at the McArthur Squash Center
