Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Starts and Finishes Fast in Win Over Washington (Md.)

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Austin Inge scored 10 points, set a career high with seven rebounds and neared a career best with five assists in 19 minutes of playing time during a 91-33 victory by the Navy (3-6) men's basketball team over Washington (Md.), Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

Washington (Md.) competes on the NCAA Division III level and considered this to be an exhibition game which will not count toward its season record that currently is 3-6.

"These games in the middle of final exams are always sort of scary," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "We practiced (only) Thursday, Friday and Saturday (this week).  I thought we did some good things.  I thought we shot the ball better than we had, which is a good thing for us because we really haven't shot the ball well.  We have guys who can shoot it well because they do it in practice but it hasn't (yet) translated into games.  Defensively we were pretty good; we are still working on some of our schemes."

Five Mids scored at least nine points and seven had at least four rebounds in the win.

Navy scored the first 11 points of the game, then used a 9-0 run to build a 24-6 cushion with over 11 minutes still to play in the half.

Inge accounted for six points during that 9-0 spurt.

Navy extended its advantage to 46-20 at intermission thanks to shooting 56 percent from the field and holding Washington to a 23-percent effort.  The Mids led the Shoremen 15-2 in fast break points and 24-8 in points in the paint.

Navy put the game completely out of reach with a 25-0 run midway through the second half that gave it a 79-30 lead with just over six minutes remaining.

Navy ended the game shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and limiting Washington to a 26-percent showing.  The Mids made 10 three-point field goals and the Shoremen made five.

Navy also held a 51-27 edge in rebounds and won all five specialty statistics including a 44-12 advantage in points in the paint.

All 16 Mids who dressed for the game took to the court, with 10 playing at least 10 minutes and 14 playing at least six minutes.  Thirteen players scored at least one point.

"I thought it was good to get a lot of young players in the game who haven't had the opportunity to play a whole lot," said DeChellis.  "Overall, I thought it was a good opportunity to get our younger guys in here and we made some shots, so that was all positive, especially in the middle of finals."

Pacing the Navy offense were Kam Summers and Lysander Rehnstrom with 13 points apiece.  Those two combined for a 5-10 effort from three-point range.  Bettering Inge's rebounding tally was Donovan Draper, who snared nine rebounds to go along with his seven points.  Additionally, Carnegie Johnson dished out a team-best six assists.

Navy will next play Thursday (2 p.m.) at Youngstown State.
