First-Half Run Carries Men’s Basketball to Second-Straight Win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A 19-0 first-half run by the Navy men's basketball team (2-4) propelled it to a 75-52 victory over Coppin State (1-8), Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.  Three Mids scored in double figures in the win with Mac MacDonald posting a team-best 12 points and Donovan Draper recording the team's first double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mids held the Eagles scoreless for nearly 10 minutes as took a 23-6 lead with 8:50 remaining in the half.  Coppin State committed 10 turnovers, was 0-10 from the floor and 0-2 from the free throw line during the drought. Conversely, Navy was 4-9 from the floor, made 10-12 free throw attempts and turned the ball over four times in the same span.

"I thought we were really good defensively," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "We are really improving defensively.  They (Coppin State) are a very athletic team and have guys who can score.  They scored a lot the other night against UMBC (89).  I thought we did a really good job of being where we are supposed to be, with our gap defense to try and take away their driving angles."

Navy led by as many was 18 points in the first half and went into the locker room holding a 35-23 lead.

The Mids scored 15 points after the 15 Coppin State turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play and the Eagles did not score following the four Navy turnovers.  Navy shot 34.6 percent (9-26) from the field before halftime and limited Coppin State to a 28.6-percent (6-21) effort.  Also, the Mids were 16-23 (69.9%) from the free throw line and the Eagles were 9-14 (64.3%).

Navy scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half to jump in front, 44-25, four minutes into the stanza.  The Mids soon led by 22 points (49-27), which became a 25-point lead (68-43) before they took their largest lead of the game at 28 points (75-47).

Navy shot 60 percent (15-25) from the field in the second half, including a 5-9 (55.6%) showing from three-point land, to end the game having connected on 47 percent of its shots.  The defense held Coppin State to a 9-28 (32.1%) shooting mark after halftime and the Eagles recorded a 31-percent effort for the game.

Navy's field goal percentage was a season high, as were its number of free throw makes (20) and attempts (31).  Additionally, Coppin State's field goal percentage was Navy's best defensive effort of the season.

"They (Coppin State) took hard shots because we didn't let them drive to the basket," said DeChellis.  "It was our best defensive effort (of the season) from start to finish.

"It was a good game for our guys. I am proud of them.  It wasn't an easy game."

MacDonald fell two points shy of tying his career high for points in a game and he set a career best with six rebounds.  Draper missed by one rebound Wednesday against VMI of having a double-double in back-to-back games.  Austin Benigni chipped in 11 points and six assists and Austin Inge had nine points and four assists.

Navy will play two more games this week.  The Mids will play Tuesday at George Washington before traveling to Connecticut for a Friday game at Quinnipiac.
