Women’s Tennis Gets Back to Winning Ways Against Howard

Navy Has Won 11 Straight Home Matches Dating Back to Last Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Looking to rebound after seeing its winning streak snapped at Liberty yesterday, the Navy women's tennis team returned home to pick up a 5-2 victory over Howard on Sunday morning at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

The win moves the Midshipmen to 9-3 on the season and extends Navy's streak to 10 straight home victories dating back to last season. For the Bison, they dropped their second-straight match and fell to 2-4 overall.

Navy opened up the morning with a win on the No. 2 doubles court courtesy of sophomores Kate Lee and Parvathi Shanker notching a 6-2 win over Oluwayemisi Ifederu and Emnet Simunyola, while sophomore Emily Tannenbaum and junior Samantha Johns clinched the doubles point for the Mids at the top spot via a 6-2 victory against Nadia Pegram and Selah Stibbins.

Despite losing the doubles point, Howard did grab a doubles match when Jordan Grayson and Sifa Butcher played out their contest against sophomore Sylvia Eklund and freshman Ellie Choate and beat the Navy duo, 6-4.

Freshman Hanna Elks Smith quickly made it 2-0 Navy when she swept Simunyola on the No. 6 singles court with a 6-0, 6-0 score, and junior Stella Ribaudo got the Mids another singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot against Grayson.

Clinching the Navy victory for the second time in three contests was freshman Sia Chaudry on the second court, who defeated Stibbins with a 6-4, 6-1 win, while Johns tacked on another point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ifederu in Johns' first singles match of the season.

Howard did claim the final two singles matches, as Pegram outlasted Shanker on the No. 3 court in a 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 battle, while Butcher defeated senior Casey Accola with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7 final.

Smith's victory gives her wins in each of her last four singles matches, while Johns' match was her first singles appearance since Jan. 30, 2022 against Villanova.

The Mids are now 9-2 against Howard all-time, winning the last seven meetings between the two teams.
