Navy Gymnastics Prepares to Host 2023 ECAC Championship

Mids have won four straight league titles

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The four-time defending ECAC Champions, the Navy gymnastics team will be looking to capture its fifth straight conference crown on Saturday when it hosts the 2023 ECAC Championship. Welcoming conference foes, No. 11 Army, No. 12 Springfield, No. 13 William & Mary, No. 14 Greenville and No. 15 to the Halsey Field House Gymnastics Facility, No. 9 Navy will take aim at capturing another one of its year-long goals as the multi-team event is slated to begin at 2 p.m. Besides vying for the team title on Saturday, the top six scorers in the all-around competition and on each individual apparatus will earn All-ECAC honors.

Most Recent ECAC Championship ~ April 2, 2022
One week after surpassing the 400-point barrier for the first time in 2022, the Navy gymnastics team continued it ultra-successful run of postseason action with a dominant performance at the ECAC Championship. Taking on a field of No. 11 Army, No. 12 Springfield and No. 13 William & Mary, the eighth-ranked Mids rolled to a 14.8-point victory and a total score of 401.85 at Kaplan Arena on the campus of William & Mary on Saturday, April 2. The win was the fourth straight for Navy at the conference championship.
 
The final scoreboard had Navy first with 401.85 points and Springfield College second at 387.05. The host William & Mary squad was third with 385.25 points, while Army placed fourth with a score of 384.85.
 
Navy received contributions from across its roster as Midshipmen gymnasts won individual titles in five of the six events. Isaiah Drake led the Midshipmen contingency atop the podium on Saturday as he finished first on the parallel bars, high bar and in the all-around competition. Seniors Dan Clark and Josh Williams and junior Connor Van Loo also earned gold medals as Clark placed first on the pommel horse, while Williams was the top-scorer on the floor exercise. Van Loo's vault garnered his first career ECAC title.
 
As a team, Navy scored 69.05 points on the floor exercise, 61.2 on the pommel horse, 67.95 on the rings, 70.4 on the vault, 66.3 on the parallel bars and 66.95 on the high bar.

Last Time Out ~ USAG Collegiate Championships: March 24 & 25
In a meet that will go down in the record books, Navy and Air Force went toe-to-toe for 30 routines on Friday as part of the 2023 USAG Collegiate Championship at Springfield's Blake Arena. After the Falcons held a 0.95-point lead at the mid-way point of the competition and the Mids pulled ahead by 0.15 points through five rotations, a strong final turn on the rings by Navy helped the Mids clinch their third straight team title.
 
The final scoreboard showed Navy on top with a season-high 396.80 points, 1.3 to the positive of Air Force, who tallied 395.50 points. The host Springfield College Pride posted a score 387.35 to earn bronze, while William & Mary and Simpson rounded out the field with scores of 382.20 and 360.50, respectively.

Individually, Navy gymnasts recorded the top score on five of the six apparatus on Friday afternoon. Connor Van Loo aced his floor exercise routine to the tune of a 14.35 score, 0.25 better than his next closest competitor. Isaiah Drake was even more dominant on the rings as he cleared the field by 0.55 points with a 13.8 effort. Drake mirrored his first-place result on the vault with a 14.55, while William Champagne tied for top billing on the parallel bars courtesy of a career-best 14.0. Team captain Giovanni Gambatese was the fourth Mid to claim a spot on the top of the standings as he held off the field and turned in a score of 13.3 on the high bar.
 
Including the above mentioned four gymnasts, Navy had a total of seven different competitors qualify for Saturday's event finals.
 
As a team, Navy scored 69.00 points on the floor exercise, 62.55 on the pommel horse, 65.25 on the rings, 71.05 on the vault, 66.20 on the parallel bars and 62.75 on the high bar.

One day after securing the team title at the 2023 USAG Collegiate Championship, Navy got the chance to showcase some its best with seven members of the program competing at in the event finals of the two-day championship meet. Of the 12 routines that were performed by Midshipmen at Blake Arena, 10 resulted in podium-worthy top-six outcomes, including four by Drake.

Vehicle access to the U.S. Naval Academy is limited to those with a Department of Defense identification card ... Spectators may park outside of the USNA grounds and enter the Academy through the visitors' entrance located at Gate One at the corner of King George and Randall Streets (52 King George St.). Anyone under the age of 18, and who does not have a government-issued ID, must be accompanied by an adult. Halsey Field House is located directly to the right of the visitors' entrance.
