Deegan and Shreves Garner League Honors, Men’s Golf Concludes Season at Patriot League Championship

PHOENIX, Md. //  Led by team captain Keegan Shreves' (Sr / Potomac, Md.) 12-over par 228 (80-74-74), the Navy men's golf team closed out the 2023 Patriot League Championship in sixth place with a 59-over par 923 (314-304-205). The three-day, 54-hole tournament was played amid torrential downpours and gusty winds on both Friday and Sunday in what marked the first Patriot League Championship hosted by Loyola at the par-72 Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Md.

After opening the tournament with an 8-over par 80, Shreves kept his focus and rallied over the next two rounds. The veteran player carded back-to-back rounds of 74 to earn a top-10 finish for the third-consecutive year. He is one of only six players in Navy men's golf history to earn All-Patriot League recognition three or more times and the first since August Jonas did so in 2012, '13 and '14.

Making his Patriot League Tournament debut, Jack Tarzy (Fr / Medford, N.J.) finished 4 strokes behind his team captain in 18th with a 16-over par 232. Tarzy began the final round in 27th, but he matched Shreves' final 18 holes with a 2-over par 74 to earn a top-20 finish.

Chip Deegan (Fr / Newport Beach, Calif.), who was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches, finished tied for 23rd alongside teammate Benjamin Valdez (So / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.). Deegan shot rounds of 78, 77 and 79, while Valdez carded marks of 79, 75 and 80 to post an 18-over par 234. Deegan is the sixth Navy player to be named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and first since it became an award voted on by the coaches instead of it being awarded to the highest-placing rookie in the league championship. The last Navy player to earn the award was Charlie Musto in 2018 when he also was the individual medalist.

Derek Weaver (Fr / Hackettstown, N.J.) turned in a 20-over par 236 (78-80-78) in the first countable tournament of his career to finish 29th, while Owen Huntington (So / Camas, Wash.) closed out the competition in 46th with a 26-over par 242 (79-78-85).
