Navy Football Announces Team Awards at Annual Senior Salute

The annual Navy football banquet took place on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall where several prestigious awards were handed out.
 
Senior striker John Marshall (Highland, Md.) was named the winner of the E.E. "Rip" Miller Award, which is presented to the season's most valuable player as voted on by his teammates.
 
Marshall, who was one of Navy's three team captains, had one of the best senior seasons in school history, recording a school-record 11.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for a loss, which are the third most in school history.  He finished third in the nation in both sacks and tackles for a loss per game. 
 
Marshall led the team in tackles (96), tackles for a loss, sacks, pass breakups (7) and quarterback hurries (6) and tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (2).
 
Marshall was the only player, offensive or defensive, to be a unanimous selection to the All-American Athletic Conference team and was named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year.
 
Marshall was also the recipient of the Joe Bellino Award, which is presented to the varsity football player whose inspiring on-the-field performance made a significant impact on the team and contributed to its overall success during the season.
 
In February, Marshall was named the winner of the Tony Rubino Memorial Silver Helmet Award, which was presented at the annual Touchdown Club of Annapolis banquet to Navy's "Most Outstanding Player."
 
Senior raider Nicholas Straw (Lebanon, Ohio) was named the winner of the Roger Staubach Award, which is presented to the varsity football player who demonstrated consistent, outstanding leadership and an "Expect to Win" attitude in contributing to the team's success during the season and embodied honor, courage and commitment on and off the playing field.
 
Straw started 27 games over his career and earned three varsity letters. He started all 12 games in 2022 and finished the year with 55 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks.
 
Straw was also named the recipient of the First Lieutenant Ron Winchester Unsung Hero Award, which is presented to an unheralded senior recognized as an overachiever and role model as selected by a vote of his teammates. 
 
Senior defensive tackle John Brand (Flower Mound, Texas) was named the winner of the Cmdr. Ralph Sentmann Award, which honors the member of the graduating class from the varsity football team who has achieved the highest ranking in academic order of merit. 
 
Brand, who has a 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in robotics & control engineering (honors), stands No. 1 in the senior class in academic order of merit.
 
Brand also took home the Jeffrey R. Korn Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given annually to the first classman on the team who has demonstrated excellence both in the classroom and on the football field. 
 
Senior linebacker Terrell Adams (Birmingham, Ala.) was named the winner of the Cooke Award, which is given to the player who has done the most to promote team spirit.
 
Terrell and his twin brother Josh lost both their mother and grandmother to COVID on consecutive day,s yet never wavered in their commitment to the football program or the school. They were named finalists for the Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award and the Walt Disney Spirit Award.
 
Senior offensive tackle Kip Frankland (Germantown, Tenn.) was awarded the Outstanding Lineman Award, presented annually to a member of the graduating class who, as a football interior lineman, has excelled as a student-athlete and contributed to the overall team leadership and spirit.     
 
Frankland was one of three team captains on the football team and was also voted as the captain of all the team captains at the Naval Academy. On the field he started 27-consecutive games on the offensive line, including every game in each of his final two years.  He was named All-East as a junior.
 
Freshman slot back Brandon Chatman (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named the winner of the Loree "Rip" Collins and "Arch" Roos Class of 1949 Junior Varsity Player of the Year Award as selected by a vote of his teammates
