BALTIMORE, Md. //
Henry Tolker (A / So / Catonsville, Md.) scored a career-high 6 goals, while netminder
Pat Ryan (Sr / Groton, Mass.) made the most saves by a Navy goalie since 1999 to lead the Navy men's lacrosse team (6-6, 3-2 Patriot League) to an 11-10 victory over 13th-ranked Loyola (6-4, 3-2 Patriot League) Friday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore, Md.
The win marked Navy's second in a row against a nationally-ranked team after upsetting 17th-ranked Boston University 10-8 last Friday in Annapolis.
Both defensive units were on display in the opening half as the two teams went into the break knotted at two goals apiece. It was the fourth time this season (Mount St. Mary's 2, Queens 0, Manhattan 1) Navy's defense has held the opponent to two or fewer goals through the first 30 minutes of action.
Navy, meanwhile, took its first lead of the game nearly three minutes into the third quarter when
Jon Jarosz (M / Jr / Gambrills, Md.) drew a double team, leaving Tolker alone behind the net. Tolker wrapped around the right side of the cage and, despite Loyola goalkeeper Luke Staudt (Jr) getting a piece of the shot, the ball rolled in for Tolker's third of the game.
The Greyhounds answered by scoring two goals in just over a minute-and-a-half, including Dylan Binney's lone goal of the contest to give Loyola a 4-3 lead.
Navy's
Anthony Ghobriel (So / Dallas, Texas) won the ensuing faceoff and was off to the races. He looked to take the shot, but instead found Tolker sitting on the left side of the crease and who promptly poked in his fourth-consecutive goal for the Mids. While the goal not only erased any momentum Loyola may have gained, the Mids parlayed the goal into a 5-0 run over the final 11 minutes of the quarter to give Navy an 8-4 advantage heading into the final frame.
The game took a turn in the early minutes of the fourth quarter when Loyola scored three-consecutive goals, two of which were scored on extra-man following a two-minute unreleaseable penalty by the Mids on the initial goal, to close the gap to one (8-7).
Navy came right back and scored the next three, as
Max Hewitt (M / Jr / Denver, Colo.) ducked under a defender and dodged another, sending his 10-yard shot past Staudt's ankles to kick off the run. That goal gave Hewitt his 30th point of the season, making him just the eighth midfielder in program history to reach the 30-point milestone multiple times in a career - Greyson Torain (2017-18-19), Ryan Wade (2018-19), Graham Gill (2004-05), Jamie Slough (1992-93-94), Brian Keith (1989-90), Glen Miles (1984-86) and Mike Chanenchuk (1977-78-79).
Though Navy held a four-goal advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the contest, the Hounds scored the final three goals of the game. Davis Lindsey (A / Jr.) scored two of the three, including a goal with 35.7 seconds left. Loyola won the ensuing faceoff, but Ryan would extinguish any hopes of a game-tying goal by the Hounds when he turned aside Mustang Sally's (DM / Sr) shot with 26 seconds to go.
Tolker led all scorers from both teams with a career-high six points on six goals. The six goals are the most by a Navy player since Dave Little scored a school-record nine goals on nine shots against Lehigh on March 25, 2017. Hewitt recorded his third-consecutive hat trick with four points on three goals and an assist. Meanwhile,
Sam Dracobly (M / Sr / Seattle, Wash.) and
Paul Garza (M / Fr / Frederick, Md.) continue to contribute in a supporting role as Dracobly made athletic plays on back-to-back goals in the third quarter for resulting in goals, while Garza, playing in just his fifth-career game, dealt out a career-best three assists after coming into the contest with two-career points.
Friday night's contest marked just the sixth time in series history (17 gms) and the fourth time since Loyola joined the Patriot League that Navy has reached double figures in the scoring column. Meanwhile, the defense held Loyola to just 10 goals, the fewest it has scored against the Mids since Navy defeated the Hounds 10-9 in Annapolis on March 19, 2016.
Navy's stellar defensive performance started in goal where Ryan made a career-high 23 saves. It was the most saves by a Navy goalkeeper since Mickey Jarboe made 25 stops in an 8-6 victory over ninth-ranked North Carolina on March 6, 1999. It also marked the first time a Navy goalie has made 20 saves in a game since the Mids' 2016 NCAA Quarterfinals contest against Brown where John Connors turned 21 shots aside.
Nine different Mids recorded caused turnovers in the contest, as Loyola turned the ball over 16 times and failed to clear the ball four times.
Loyola, who was playing without leading scorer Matthew Minicus due to injury, spread its 10 goals among eight different players with Lindsey leading the way with three.
The defense forced 11 of Navy's 17 turnovers in the contest with Matt Hughes (D / Gr) pacing the team with 3 takeaways, while Cam Wyers (D / Gr) and Mustang Sally had two apiece.
While Loyola held a narrow 13-11 advantage in the faceoff column, Ghobriel bounced back from a rough first half (1-5) to win 10 of the 19 draws over the final 30 minutes.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next Saturday when they play host to Lafayette (4-7, 1-4 Patriot League) in the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The women will play host to Holy Cross beginning at 12-noon, while the men's game will follow at 3:30 pm. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Pete Medhurst and
Joe Miller on the call, while the men's game will also be carried live via the radio waves on WNAV 1430 AM / 99.9 FM and WFED 1500 AM.
