Men’s Tennis Closes Weekend with Wins Over Colgate and George Mason

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team had 12 different players win at least one match during victories Sunday against Colgate and George Mason.  The Mids (17-19, 5-0) posted a 7-0 win over Colgate (4-15, 3-5) in Annapolis in the morning and won a 4-3 decision at George Mason (6-7) in Fairfax, Va., in the afternoon.

Navy 7, Colgate 0
The Mids won three close doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.  Navy's No. 3 tandem of Herrick Legaspi (Fr., Sacramento, Calif.) and Christian Pumpelly (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.) was the first team to finish as it won a 6-3 decision over Mason Caldwell and Dean Vlassis.  The Mids secured the point with a victory by their No. 2 team of Finn Garner (Sr., Arnold, Md.) and Nicholas Nguyen (Jr., McLean, Va.).  The pair defeated Josh Israel and Aidan Lee by the score of 6-4.  That also was the score of the No. 1 match won by Navy's Luke Garner (So., Arnold, Md.) and Sasha Panyan (Jr., Lutherville, Md.) against Jack Selati and Benito Vlassis.

Nguyen made the score 2-0 in favor of the Mids when he defeated Tejas Gupta, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 6 flight.  Aniketh Ayinala (Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mike Thomas at No. 5 singles.  Earning the match-clinching fourth team point was Legaspi when he defeated Max Litton, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.

Panyan was the next player to finish as he defeated Selati, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.  The No. 3 match saw Luke Garner post a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ben Graham.  Then at No. 2 singles, Gavin Segraves (Sr., Charlottesville, Va.) rallied past Benito Vlassis, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 1-0 (10-6).

"Colgate is a very competitive and spirited team," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.  "We knew we had to be playing well to have a chance at earning the win."

Navy 4, George Mason 3
The Mids won two of the three doubles matches in the afternoon match against the Patriots to win the doubles point.  Navy's No. 1 tandem of Finn Garner and Nathan Nguyen (Fr., McLean, Va.) lost just one game in winning its match against Momin Khan and Rithik Sardana.  J.J. Etterbeek (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Matthew McNair (Fr., Annapolis, Md.) secured the point with their 6-3 victory over Rishab Sardana and Niza Simunyola at the No. 2 flight.  In the remaining match, George Mason's No. 3 team of Monil Lotlikar and Alvaro Pedraza won a 6-4 decision over Graydon Buckingham (Fr., Daufuskie Island, S.C.) and Dylan Carol (Sr., Miami, Fla.).

The singles matches began with George Mason winning the first set in four of the six flights.

The first match to finish saw McNair defeat Herman Jentoft, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.  George Mason sliced the lead in half (2-1) when Zavan Fahim won a 6-3, 6-3 match over Buckingham at No. 6 singles.  The Patriots then tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 3 singles by Rishab Sardana over Nicholas Nguyen.

Pumpelly gave Navy a 3-2 lead when he posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory in his No. 4 singles match against Hayden Postin.  Ayinala then notched a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lotlikar at No. 2 singles to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Mids.  The remaining match on the courts needed just one more point to be played after Ayinala secured the victory before Rithik Sardana defeated Etterbeek, 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3.

"Aniketh had a great day," said Garner.  "He played well against Colgate and clinched the George Mason match with a very competitive three-set win."
