Special Recognition (24)
• Defensive coordinator Brian Newberry was named head football coach on Dec. 19.
• Senior striker John Marshall (football) recorded 19.5 sacks, which was a school record. His four sacks against UCF was also a school record for sacks in a game.
• Former Navy football head coach Paul Johnson is the 25th person that either played or coached at the Naval Academy to be selected to the College Football Hall of Fame and the fifth coach joining Gil Dobie (1917-19), William Ingram (1916-18), Wayne Hardin (1959-64) and George Welsh (1973-81).
• Navy compiled an 18-0 overall record and won the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) DI-A National Championship.
• Women's rugby qualified for the CRAA Fall DI Playoffs as an at-large team. The Mids traveled to Colorado Springs to battle service academy rival Air Force in the quarterfinals and won a defensive battle over the Falcons, 12-3. Navy returned to Annapolis to face Northeastern the following week in the semifinals. The Mids scored eight tries and won the match handily, 52-5, to advance to the CRAA Fall DI Championship against Utah State in Charlotte, N.C. Navy's offense was unstoppable again, scoring a season-high 61 points with 10 tries to win the contest, 61-28. The Mids outscored their three playoff opponents, 125-36, and scored 20 tries.
• May 2022 graduate Victoria Tran (Women's Soccer) was named as one of nine finalists for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She is the first Patriot League student-athlete to ever reach the final round for this distinguished national award.
• Navy men's soccer junior midfielder David Jackson was named the 2022 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year, the first player in program history to win the award. Jackson had garnered the league's Preseason Midfielder of the Year award prior to the season and went on to lead the Midshipmen with six goals and 15 points, including three game-winning tallies.
• Junior Ian Dinmore (Gymnastics) was named the recipient of the 2023 NCAA ELITE 90 Award winner for the Men's Gymnastics Championship. A chemistry major with a 4.00 GPA, he's first in the USNA Class of 2024 and is the second-ever Navy recipient as Micah Oh was honored with the 2020-21 ELITE 90 Award at the men's swimming & diving championship.
• Junior Syam Buradagunta (Gymnastics) and sophomore Isaiah Drake (Gymnastics) are the first Navy gymnasts to garner NCAA Championship All-America honors since 1973 when Eric Swanson finished on the podium for the pommel horse. Buradagunta placed eighth on the floor exercise, while Drake finished eighth in the all-around competition.
• Sophomore Isaiah Drake (Gymnastics), a member of the United States' Senior National Development Team, competed at the 2023 DTB Pokal Gymnastics Festival, March 17-19 in Stuttgart, Germany. Suiting up for the co-ed team of American gymnasts in the Mixed Cup event, Drake helped the squad place fourth at the international event.
• Jade Geif (Women's Basketball, Class of 2014) had her No. 21 jersey retired on January 14 as part of the Navy Loyola women's basketball game. The only female player in school history to amass over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, she became the third player from the program to have her jersey raised to the rafters. Geif is the only player in Patriot League history to garner four All-Tournament team honors and one of four to earn Tournament MVP awards.
• Freshman Parker Haydin (Rifle) claimed bronze in the National Rifle Junior Olympics at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center. With his finish, Haydin qualified for the 2023 ISSF Junior World Championships in Changwon, Korea, July 14-18.
• Jimmy Stobs was named head men's golf coach on Aug. 26.
• Junior Jackson Bonitz (Men's Lacrosse) was a member of the U.S. Men's U21 Lacrosse Team that won gold at the 2022 U21 World Lacrosse Championship played in Limerick, Ireland on Aug. 10-20. The United States defeated Canada 12-10 to win its ninth world title. Bonitz is the first Navy player to be named to the final roster for the U.S. Men's U21 Team since it was established in 1988 (1988, '92, '96, '99, '03, '08, '12, '16, '20/22).
• Women's lacrosse graduate Alexis Bell ('22) competed for Team Jamaica in the 2022 World Lacrosse Women's World Championship, which was held Wednesday, June 29 through Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University in Towson, Md. Bell was eligible to play for Team Jamaica because her dad, Mark Bell, was born in Jamaica.
• The Navy is celebrating 50 years of women flying and, as part of that celebration, Super Bowl LVII featured an all female flyover during the National Anthem with former Women's Lacrosse student-athlete Suzelle Thomas ('18) piloting the F-35C Lightning II. Thomas was one of four Naval Academy graduates taking part in the flyover, but the only former athlete.
• Nearly 100 of the nation's top women's lacrosse players were selected for tryouts for the 2024 U.S. Women's U20 National Team at the USA Lacrosse headquarters. Navy freshman midfielder Maggie DeFabio (Women's Lacrosse) was among the 99 selected. Tryouts will be held July 7-9 in preparation for the world championship which will be held in Hong Kong, China from August 15-25, 2024.
• Alex Romano (Lightweight Rowing) was named a 2023 Knight-Hennessy Scholar. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program provides full funding for students to pursue a graduate degree at Stanford University.
• Baseball head coach Paul Kostacopoulos announced his retirement from coaching following the 2023 season, ending his 34-year head-coaching career with 1,027 overall wins and 523 victories at Navy. Kostacopoulos led Navy to six Patriot League regular season titles over his 18 seasons in Annapolis, also guiding the Mids to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2016 and producing 85 All-Patriot League selections.
• Chuck Ristano was named head baseball coach on June 17. Ristano spent the past 13 seasons as a pitching coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference, helping guide Notre Dame to three NCAA Tournaments and a College World Series berth during his 12 years in South Bend before heading to Florida State for the 2023 campaign.
• Women's golf head coach Nadia Ste-Marie announced her retirement at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season after leading the program for its first 11 seasons, guiding the Mids to the 2021 Patriot League title while producing 15 All-Patriot League selections.
• Director of Track and Field / Cross Country Jamie Cook (Men's Outdoor Track and Field) was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. He claimed the accolade over 30 other head coaches in the region. The men's team concluded the outdoor season as the top-ranked program in the Mid-Atlantic Region and posted 25 times / marks that ranked in the top 10. Additionally, Associate Head Coach Chris Campbell was recognized as the Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
• Senior Lewis Gray (Men's Rugby) won the 2023 Rudy Scholz Award, which is presented annually to the top men's college rugby player in the country. Gray became the second Midshipmen to win the award since it was introduced in 2016.
• Gray was also recognized as the 2022-23 recipient of the NAAA Sword for Men, which is presented to that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics during his years of varsity competition.
• Former rugby coach Mike Flanagan was inducted into the USA Rugby Hall of Fame.
• Senior Molly Mangan (Women's Track and Field) was the 2022-23 recipient of the Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women, which is presented to that woman of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in women's athletics during her years of varsity competition.
• Senior Brett Brady (Men's Cross Country / Track and Field) was the 2022-23 recipient of the Coaches' Calvert Award which is presented by the Naval Academy Athletic Association in honor of Vice Admiral James Calvert,
Superintendent of the Naval Academy (1968-72), to recognize a graduating varsity letterwinner (men and women) who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.
• Senior Olivia Foster (Women's Soccer) was the 2022-23 recipient of the Coaches' Calvert Award for Women, Superintendent of the Naval Academy (1968-72), to recognize a graduating varsity letterwinner (men and women) who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.
• Water polo seniors Peter Hillen and Graham Lindner were ranked first and third in the Class of 2023 in overall order of merit. This is the eighth year in a row, the 11th time in the last 13 years and 18th time starting with the Class of 2000 in which the No. 1 graduate in Overall Order of Merit is a varsity athlete.
• Navy moved into first place for the most Patriot League titles won by any school in the league. Navy has amassed 157 titles since joining the league in 1991-92.
• Navy won 11 Patriot League titles this season. The rest of the league totaled 13 titles. The 11 titles are the most won by Navy in a season, the most won by a league school since 1994-95 and tied for second place for the most won by a school in a season (12 is the record).
