Volleyball Posts Second Sweep in as Many Days

ALBANY, N.Y. -- A near double-double by Jamie Llewellyn helped the Navy (2-1) volleyball team to a three-set (25-15, 25-10, 25-21) victory over UAlbany (1-1), Saturday afternoon at the Capital Center in Albany, N.Y.

Llewellyn ended the match with 17 kills, a .382 hitting percentage, two aces and nine digs.  That effort left her one shy of tying her career high for kills, which was set last year in a five-set match at Bucknell.

Today's match came one day after the Mids swept Syracuse and lost in four sets to UCF on the opening day of the season.

"I loved our focus and energy on day two and match three of the opening weekend," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "UAlbany is a solid team (also defeated Syracuse on Friday) and they came out strong in set three.  We stayed poised and finished extremely strong."

Set One
The Mids fell behind 4-1 and 6-3, but responded by taking a 13-7 and 18-9 lead.

Four Mids accrued three kills in the set and the Navy defense limited UAlbany to six kills and a (-).024 hitting percentage.

Set Two
Navy quickly took control of the set by jumping out to an 11-3 advantage.  The score eventually was 16-7 in favor of the Mids when they notched the next seven points to take a commanding lead.

Llewellyn accounted for eight of Navy's 12 kills in the set (UAlbany had five as a team) as she hit .636 (8-1-11) in the frame.

Set Three
The Great Danes took leads of 4-1, 8-5 and 14-8 in the first part of the stanza.  The Mids answered with a run of their own and tied the score at 15-15.  UAlbany scored the next two points, but Navy posted the ensuing five points to take a 20-17 lead.  After a kill by the Great Danes made the score 20-18, the Mids placed the next three points on the scoreboard to build a 23-18 cushion and soon reached match point with a 24-19 lead.  UAlbany erased two of those match points, but a kill by Jordan Llewellyn ended the 74-minute match.

Statistical Notes
Navy outhit UAlbany, .270-.020, thanks to holding advantages of 37-23 in kills and 53-37 in digs.  The Mids also dropped in nine aces (only four service errors) and allowed the Great Danes to tally four aces (seven errors).

Jordan Llewelyn posted eight kills and 12 digs and Hannah Hoover snared 11 digs.  Middle hitter Anna Klemeyer continued her strong opening-weekend play with six kills and zero attack errors on eight swings.

"Jamie and Anna are a difficult combination to defend and today it showed with them both putting up excellent attacking numbers," said Labrador.  "We looked more like ourselves from the service line today.  That is a team goal and I liked seeing six different players with aces."

Up Next
Navy will open its home slate by playing host to Maryland, Utah Valley and Old Dominion Sept. 1-3 in the 12th playing of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational.
