Men’s Soccer Wins Physical Battle at Marist

Andrew Schug Scores Game-Winning Goal, Tim O’Donohue Picks Up 50th Victory as Navy Head Coach

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a physical match that saw 17 different Midshipmen contribute, the Navy men's soccer team (3-4-1) outlasted Marist (3-3-1) for a 1-0 shutout victory on Tuesday night at Tenney Stadium.

Led by sophomore Andrew Schug's first-half tally and junior goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook's second clean sheet of the season, the non-conference win handed head coach Tim O'Donohue his 50th victory with the Navy program.

The two sides quickly showed the matchup would be physical with constant offensive pressure. While Holbrook had to smother Joseph Daher shot in the 13th minute and a Jared Juleau header in the 23rd minute, the Navy offense used its speed to generate a number of near-misses at the other end, but a corner kick in the 32nd minute ended up providing the Mids their best chance. After the corner from senior David Jackson was cleared away, the midfielder regained the ball near the sideline and launched a cross into the box and sophomore Andrew Schug was there to head home the first goal of the night.

Another Holbrook stop on Adam Rustami in the 36th minute helped the Mids hold off a Marist response before the half, while the Navy netminder had to make a highlight-reel save on Juleau in the 63rd minute when the Red Foxes' leading scorer was left open near the right post. Junior Noah Ward tried to give the Mids a two-goal cushion in the 68th minute when he raced in off a pass from sophomore A.J. Schuetz, but his shot was cut off by Marist keeper Luca Bulfon.

Despite Marist keeping up the pressure in their attacking end with several wide shots, junior Wasswa Robbins nearly put the game away in the 84th minute when he raced past the defenders before Bulfon closed in on him, and Robbins almost had another chance in the 89th minute but his shot was blocked by a defender.

Holbrook finished with four saves for his third win of the campaign, while Bulfon ended the night with two saves for the Red Foxes.

Coach Tim O'Donohue Comments
"We played very well on the ball in the first half, while our defensive organization and grit really showed through in the second half to finish the job. We had a lot of contributions throughout our lineup and bench, which resulted in a good road win. The team is starting to find our form."
