Colgate Makes Plays Down the Stretch to Edge Past Navy Volleyball Team

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate (9-4, 3-0) rallied to win sets four and five to defeat the Navy (9-2, 1-1) volleyball team, 27-25, 20-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, Friday night at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.  The rematch of last year's Patriot League Tournament final that also went Colgate's way in five sets lasted two and one-half hours.

The result snapped Navy's eight-match winning streak and extended Colgate's winning streak this year to seven matches and its home winning streak to 29-straight matches over the last three seasons.

"Colgate really stepped up and took their game to another level that we didn't have answers for tonight," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "We normally benefit from our serves making opponents more predictable, but Colgate was up to the challenge and finished the match receiving serve at a near perfect level.

"We played hard and everyone left everything they had on the court.  There are some details we can tighten up, but now we recover and put our focus on Holy Cross."

Set One
The score was tied 17 times and the lead was exchanged five times.

Navy took a 22-19 lead only to see Colgate score the next three points to tie the frame.  Anna Klemeyer posted a kill to stop the Colgate run, but the Raiders scored the next two points to serve for the set with a 24-23 advantage.  Another Klemeyer kill tied the score, then Jordan Llewellyn recorded a kill of her own to make the score 25-24 in favor of the Mids.  Colgate promptly registered a kill, an ace and a block to claim the first set.

Set Two
Navy bounced back quickly as it took a 10-4 lead early in the set.  Colgate closed to within one point at 14-13, but the Mids responded by extending the cushion to 19-14.  The gap between the teams was at least four points over the remainder of play.

Set Three
An early 5-2 Colgate lead turned into a 13-8 Navy advantage.  The Mids held a multi-point lead until the Raiders made the score 19-18.  Four sideouts in a row kept the Navy lead at one point (21-20).  Another sideout on a kill from Maggie Bodman was followed by a kill from Jordan Llewellyn to make the score 23-20.  The Raiders notched the ensuing two points, but a kill from setter Averi Miller gave the Mids a 24-22 lead.  Colgate erased one set-point opportunity for Navy on a kill, but Jordan Llewellyn posted another kill to give the Mids to stanza.

Of Navy's 25 points in the set, 20 came from kills.  Jordan Llewellyn alone accounted for nine of those kills on her 11 swings (.636).

Set Four
Colgate jumped out to leads of 9-4 and 13-7 on its way to winning the frame and forcing a fifth set.

Set Five
Navy built leads of 7-4 and 10-6, but Colgate scored the ensuing six points to take a 12-10 lead.  A Bodman kill briefly slowed down the Raiders, but they placed the next two points on the scoreboard to take a 14-11 lead.  A pair of sideouts followed to end the match.

Statistical Notes
Navy had 12 more kills than Colgate, 72-60, but also had nine more attack errors, 28-19.  The Mids did end the match with a slightly better attack percentage, .262-.259.  Navy held a 69-60 lead in digs but the Raiders finished with a 13-8 advantage in blocks.

The service line hurt Navy as it finished with three aces and 13 errors in comparison to nine aces and 12 errors for Colgate.

Navy had four players finish with double figure kills.  Jordan Llewellyn totaled 19 to go along with 13 digs, Bodman set a new career high with 18 kills, Klemeyer recorded a career-high 13 kills and added four blocks and Jamie Llewellyn posted 13 kills and 12 digs.  Additionally, Hannah Hoover led all players in the match with 19 digs.
