ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- One day after the Navy (11-3, 3-2) volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit in sets to defeat Bucknell, the Mids were on the other end of that result as Lafayette (7-7, 3-3) rallied to win a 24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 15-10 decision Saturday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.
Both of Navy's matches this weekend last over two and one-half hours.
Navy finished with more kills than Lafayette, 63-59, but the Mids accrued 31 attack errors and forced only 19.
Jordan Llewellyn recorded 21 kills in the loss.
"Lafayette ran a really nice offense and was aggressive all night," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. "Outside of the third set, we never found a consistent, sustained series of plays to take control of the match.
"We will regroup this week and stay focused on making daily improvements on the areas that were exposed this weekend."
Set One
Lafayette took an early 7-2 lead, but Navy was able to tie the frame at 15-15. The Leopards regained a 17-16 lead only to see the Mids build leads of 19-17 and 21-18. It soon became a 24-21 Navy advantage when Lafayette erased three set point opportunities to tie the score at 24-24. A service error gave the Mids their fourth chance to win the set, which they did on a Llewellyn kill.
Set Two
After a 4-1 lead for Lafayette at the start of the set, the teams were within one or two points of each other for the majority of the remainder of the frame. The Leopards eventually used a 4-0 run to take a 23-18 lead. Two sideouts made the score 24-19 before the Mids were able to close to within two points at 24-22. Lafayette won the set on a kill.
Set Three
Navy turned a slim 7-6 lead into a 12-7 advantage. Back came Lafayette and soon it was a one-point margin at 12-11. The Mids scored four of the next five points to take a 16-12 lead, which grew to a 22-13 cushion. Lafayette gained some momentum toward the end of the set as it climbed as close as three points at 24-21 before a Llewellyn kill ended the set.
Set Four
After a close start that had Lafayette in front by one at 10-9, the Leopards slowly separated and gained leads of 17-12 and 21-14 before forcing the fifth set.
Set Five
Lafayette scored back-to-back points to take a 9-6 lead, then scored three in a row to jump in front, 12-7. That was too much of a difference for the Mids to makeup.
