ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A three-minute stretch at the end of the first half saw a pair of goals from the opposition, as the Navy men's soccer team lost to Longwood, 2-0, on Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Closing out a four-game homestand, the Midshipmen fell to 2-3-0 on the campaign, while the Lancers remained undefeated this season at 3-0-1.
Navy set the tempo on offense early, but a trio of chances were turned aside when Longwood goalkeeper Max Hinke stopped sophomore
A.J. Schuetz in the 15th minute and made two consecutive saves on senior
David Jackson and sophomore
Andrew Schug in the 16th minute.
Longwood responded with three off-target shots before junior goalkeeper
Pierce Holbrook made the stop on Ben Wilkinson in the 32nd minute, while a pair of Navy misses over the net were followed by another Holbrook save in the 37th minute.
The Lancers got their opening goal in the 42nd minute, as Darcy Moffat's pursuit of the ball into the box forced the Navy defense into a miscommunication that ended with the ball deflected into the Mids' net. Simao Coelho then made it 2-0 in the 44th minute when his defense countered a Navy throw-in and got him the ball at midfield, as he raced into the box and cut back towards the middle before ripping a shot into the top-right corner.
Navy tried its best to answer back in the second half, outshooting the Lancers by an 11-5 margin, but three more saves from Hinke and a pair of shots off the woodwork thwarted the Mids' comeback attempt, as a shot from senior
Jason Aoyama in the 58th minute hit the post while Jackson's free kick in the 69th minute hit off the post as well.
Hinke ended his night with six total saves for his second shutout of the season, while Holbrook recorded two saves in the loss.
Head Coach Tim O'Donohue Comments
"We had another game where we put together great stretches and dominated play at times, but we gave up some uncharacteristic goals. We have to be able to convert more with all the amount of chances we've been creating. There was an unfortunate own goal and then another tally by them on a counter, but we also had three of our chances go off the post that could've changed the momentum of the game. It's disappointing to be dominating stretches of games and losing, but we continue to play well and everything is in front of us as we start the real season next Saturday with Patriot League play."
