ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy senior corner Dashaun Peele has been named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 51-17 victory over Charlotte.
Peele keyed Navy's defensive effort as the Midshipmen remained unbeaten, improving to 6-0 for the first time since 1979. Peele led the way with two interception returns for touchdowns, becoming the first Navy player to accomplish the feat and the second American Athletic Conference player to record two pick-sixes in a game.
Peele had a 61-yard return in the second quarter and an 84-yard return in the third as he finished with a school record 145 return yards to go with a sack and a pass breakup.
Peele's selection marks the third time in the last four games that a different Navy player has been named AAC Defensive Player of the Week (Colin Ramos against Memphis, Jaxson Campbell against Air Force).
Navy, ranked #24 in both the Associated Press and AFCA Coaches Poll, will play host to #12 / #11 Notre Dame (6-1) on Saturday at 12 noon at MetLife Stadium (82,500) in East Rutherford, N.J. The game will be televised nationally by ABC.
Navy is looking for its first 7-0 start since 1978 and just its fifth in program history. The Mids have not beaten a ranked Notre Dame team since 2009 and have only done it four times in series history (2009, 1957, 1944 and 1936).
