ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy junior striker Jaxson Campbell has been named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Navy's victory over Air Force on Saturday.
Campbell led a Navy defense that limited Air Force to seven points and 273 total yards as the Mids took the first game in the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy series with a 34-7 win in Colorado Springs, improving Navy to 5-0 on the season. The seven points scored by Air Force were the fewest they have scored at home against Navy and the 27-point win was Navy's largest margin of victory over Air Force since 1978.
Campbell recorded seven tackles, two sacks and a pass breakup in the win. He had a key third-down sack in the second quarter to force an Air Force punt and registered a sack for a 14-yard loss on fourth down in the fourth quarter to give possession back to Navy and set up the Mids final touchdown.
Junior slot back Eli Heidenreich and senior punter Riley Riethman were both named to the AAC Honor Roll.
Heidenreich rushed for 100 yards on six carries and had five receptions for 101 yards on Saturday. Heidenreich is the first player in program history with 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game.
Riethman averaged 50.6 yards per punt on five punts, including a season-long punt of 60 yards that kept Air Force pinned deep in its own territory throughout the day.
Campbell is the third Navy player to be named an AAC Player of the Week. Junior quarterback Blake Horvath was named Offensive Player of the Week after wins over Temple and Memphis.
After a bye, Navy (5-0, 3-0 in the AAC) will play host to a red-hot Charlotte squad (3-3, 2-0 in the AAC) on Saturday, Oct. 19 in a 3:30 PM start at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A win would make Navy 6-0 for the first time since 1979 and make the Mids bowl eligible for the first time since 2019.
