ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Campbell shot over 50 percent from the floor after halftime to build a double-digit lead over the Navy men's basketball team it would not relinquish in an 86-66 victory by the Camels (3-2) over the Mids (1-3), Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
"We concentrated the last two days on taking away the three-point shot after the way we guarded it against Rider," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "Then, as I told our staff, other things popped up. Today we couldn't guard the ball and they (Campbell) just drove, drove, drove. And they shot a bunch of free throws and made them all (19-22). They scored 40 points in the paint and we had no resistance to their drive. Really disappointing loss."
Navy held a 26-24 lead with five minutes left in the first half. Campbell went on a 7-0 and 10-2 run to take a 34-28 lead with a little more than two minutes left, then took a 38-33 lead at halftime.
The Mids shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half, but also were only 7-14 from the foul line. The Camels shot 44 percent from the field overall, which included a 1-12 effort from three-point range, and were 9-10 from the charity stripe.
Campbell scored the opening five points of the second half to take a 43-33 lead. Navy drew to within six points at 43-37 after a pair of
Aidan Kehoe baskets, but the Camels soon opened a 52-39 advantage with just under 14 minutes still to play.
The margin would remain in double figures for the majority of the rest of the game.
"You can't give up 80 points," said DeChellis. "We are not an offensive juggernaut. For us to think we are going to outscore people is the wrong thought process. We better think we have to work hard defensively, we better work hard at rebounding the ball. Tonight we turned the ball over, which we really haven't done this year."
Campbell made 6-11 three-point shots after halftime as part of an overall shooting effort of 57.1 percent. Conversely, Navy was 3-12 from beyond the arc and shot 35.5 percent from the floor in all during the final 20 minutes of play.
The Camels led the Mids 20-6 in points after turnovers as Campbell committed nine turnovers and forced Navy into 15. Additionally, the Camels held a 21-11 advantage in fast break points.
Kehoe was 7-11 from the floor in totaling 14 points to share the Navy scoring lead with
Austin Benigni. Kehoe also led all players with nine rebounds and Benigni dished out five assists.
Navy will be back in Alumni Hall Tuesday when it plays host to Quinnipiac in a 5:30 p.m. game.
