ANNAPOLIS, Md. --
Jack Medalie scored a career-high 18 points in a 94-43 victory by the Navy (2-4) men's basketball team over Washington (Md.), Monday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Mids.
The NCAA Division III Shoremen, who were playing their third game in four days, counted this game as an exhibition.
"I'm really proud of our guys," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "We have had a tough stretch in the schedule and we weren't very successful. Tonight, it was nice to see everyone play, it was nice to see our defense be pretty solid. It was really good to see the ball go in the basket for some guys. We made some threes and we hadn't been shooting the ball well from three at all. It was nice being in game action and making some baskets."
Navy used a 9-0 run to take a 17-8 lead six minutes into the game. The margin remained in that range until it became a 33-18 lead with just under six minutes still to play. It soon turned a 40-23 lead before Navy went into halftime holding a 44-27 cushion.
Navy totaled a 17-2 edge in second-chance points in the half despite grabbing only two more offensive rebounds (8-6). The Mids also held an 18-8 advantage in points scored in the paint.
"We were able to convert the offensive rebounds (into points)," said DeChellis.
Medalie scored 11 first-half points to lead all players in scoring at intermission.
The Mids opened the second half on an 8-0 run to build a 52-27 lead and put the game out of reach.
"We talked about coming out in the first four minutes and doing some good things, and I thought we did," said DeChellis. "We had a good scoring run in the first four minutes and that was positive. Then the second wave came in and had some deflections and we got some layups out it."
Navy shot 56.3 percent from the floor for the game and made 12-26 (46.2%) three-point attempts. Washington converted on 25.8 percent of its attempts from the floor and was 5-22 (22.7%) from three-point range.
The Mids ended the game with a 49-28 advantage in rebounding and forced 13 turnovers while committing 10 of their own.
Navy had 29 assists on its 36 made field goals.
"We shared the ball and I thought we had good ball movement," said DeChellis.
Medalie was 6-9 from the field overall, 2-4 from three-point range and made all four of his foul shots to better his previous career high of 10 points.
Aidan Kehoe was 5-7 from the floor and scored 10 points.
Jinwoo Kim fell one point short of double figures as his nine points came on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Austin Benigni totaled eight points and six assists and
Cam Cole tied a career best with eight points.
"Jack is starting to come on," said DeChellis. "I thought he played well the other day and he played well again tonight. Jinwoo made some threes. He hadn't seen the ball go in the basket much. It was good for him."
Navy now heads to Philadelphia for games Friday at Penn, Saturday against Elon and Sunday against Maine. All three games will be played in The Palestra.
