ROME, Ga. – Navy women's tennis seniors
Emily Tannenbaum and
Parvathi Shanker saw their stay at the 2024 ITA Conference Masters Championships come to an end on Friday evening, as the Midshipmen fell in the quarterfinal round of the doubles draw at the Rome Tennis Center.
After Tannenbaum reached the round-of-16 in the 32-player singles bracket on Thursday, the Navy pairing posted an opening-round win in doubles action to finish Thursday, while a come-from-behind victory for the Mids to begin Friday clinched a spot in the quarterfinals before having their run snapped in the evening.
Starting out with the round-of-32 singles competition, Tannenbaum scored a 6-4, 6-0 win over Texas freshman Carmen Herea before dropping a 6-4, 6-3 contest to Yale's Shyla Aggarwal later that day with a berth in the quarterfinals on the line.
Moving onto doubles play later that day, Tannenbaum and Shanker tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win against Kayleigh Didderiens and Zeina Shaaban of Jackson State to extend their stay to Friday. In Friday's opener, the Navy duo roared back for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory over Kansas State's Veronika Kulhava and Tereza Polakova, but the Mids were upended by the Sacramento State team of Irene Riva and Madelyn Ferreros, 6-2, 6-0, to fall two wins shy of making the NCAA Doubles Championship.
Tannenbaum finishes the fall with a 15-4 singles mark while the Tannenbaum/Shanker pairing closes with an 8-1 doubles record.
Coach Keith Puryear Comments
"It was great to have the opportunity to represent the Patriot League at this inaugural ITA event. Being here gives clear evidence of the parity that exists at the Division I level. The quality of play and the intensity of each and every match was amazing. We are so very proud of Emily and Parv and the way they both represented our team and the Naval Academy. They had some program-defining wins, such as Emily beating a seeded player from Texas in singles. That young lady for the Longhorns is seen as one of the top freshmen in the country and won six matches at the ITA All-American Championship this fall. Then, we saw Em and Parv doing the same in doubles against a good team from Kansas State. I think we saw much and learned much from the experience. We'll now wrap up the fall and look forward to preparing for spring dual-match competition in a few months."
