Mids Place Fifth at Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championship

The #22 Navy squash team (13-14) recorded a 5-4 victory over 25th-ranked Dickinson (6-11) Sunday afternoon to place fifth at the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championship played at Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia.

Weekend Highlights
• Navy, seeded fifth, dropped a 9-0 decision to top-seeded, eighth-ranked and eventual champion Drexel (8-5) Friday afternoon in the opening round

• The Mids came up short in Saturday's match against fourth-seeded and 19th-ranked MIT (11-13), as the Engineers defeated Navy 6-3 to set up the fifth-place bout against Dickinson
• #1 player Matt Wang (Jr / Malvern, Pa.), #4 Alexander Orr (So / Haverford, Pa.)and #8 Ramsay Killinger (Fr / Wyndmoor, Pa.) captured hard-fought wins against the Engineers ... Wang overcame a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 win over Mero Elmarassy, including back-to-back 12-10 victories in the fourth and fifth games ... Orr also used five games to pick up a win over Collin Wen ... with the match knotted at 4-all, Orr fought his way to a 15-13 win in the fifth to take the match ... Killinger and Mitay Nayak traded victories over the first two games, but Killinger pushed his way to victory with 11-9 and 11-5 wins in games three and four

• Sunday's fifth-place match saw runs by both programs with Navy emerging as the victor
• Back-to-back wins by #5 Matthew Kang (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) and #7 Sean Wu (Fr / Princeton, N.J.) gave Navy the early 2-0 lead
• Dickinson, however, rallied to even the match at 2-2 when Kobe Fleming came from behind to earn a five-game victory over Lucas Spiro (Jr / Buffalo, N.Y.), while James Kiracofe broke a 1-1 tie against Holden Woodward (Fr / Richmond, Va.) with an 11-9 win in the third and went on to take the #9 match with an 11-5 win in the fourth
• Tighe Mullarkey (Fr, So / Locust Valley, N.Y.) gave the Mids a 3-2 advantage thanks to a 3-0 sweep over Cormac Sullivan (11-5, 11-7, 11-3) at the #6 position
• Dickinson, however, knotted the match when Omar Ali outlasted Navy team captain Henry Sparkman (Sr / Darien, Conn.) at #2 ... after dropping the opening game, Sparkman battled back to take a 2-1 lead, however, Ali went on to win games four and five (11-7, 11-4) to earn the victory
• Navy secured the team victory as Orr and Killinger's matches finished almost simultaneously ... Orr posted his second win over the weekend behind a 3-0 sweep (11-7, 16-14, 11-6) over Samuel Knipp, while Killinger also scored his second victory with a sweep (11-7, 11-2, 11-7) against Bradley Hennessy
• Davidson's Joy Smythe proved victories in the final match of the afternoon, a five-game win (9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4) over Wang

What's Ahead
• Navy will play in the College Squash Association Team Divisional Championship next week (Feb. 15-18) held at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia
