BOSTON, Mass. -- Boston University (11-16, 6-8) scored over half of its points in the paint with post player Otto Landrum totaling 19 points as the Terriers recorded a 74-65 victory over the Navy men's basketball team (8-17, 4-10), Saturday afternoon at Case Gym in Boston.
"Boston beat us up inside," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "We gave up too many points in the paint. We tried to take away the three-point shot as their volume of three-point attempts is one of the best in the Patriot League. We couldn't give them threes."
The Terriers used their size advantage to pound the ball inside from the game's opening minutes. BU's first seven baskets were within a few feet of the rim. Soon the Mids went almost seven minutes between made field goals as the Terriers built a 21-13 lead. Navy was able to close to as few as four points at 24-20 before BU connected on a trio of triples to extend their lead to 30-23 and eventually take a 36-28 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Navy was able to cut the deficit down to five points at 36-31 in the early stages of the second half. BU responded with the next five points to regain a double-digit lead at 41-31. The Mids fought back and a
Jordan Pennick drive and score followed by a triple from
Austin Inge made the score 48-44. Each team had an empty possession, then the Terriers scored on each of their next five trips down the floor to take a 59-47 advantage with just under eight minutes showing on the clock.
The margin remained around the 10-point mark over the remainder of the game.
"We couldn't get the big basket down the stretch to give us a better opportunity to win," said DeChelllis.
Boston made just one more field goal than Navy, 25-24, but the Terriers shot 47.2 percent and the Mids 40.7 percent. Each team made six three-point field goals. A key difference was the free throw line where Boston was 18-22 (81.85) and Navy was 11-17 (64.7%).
The Terriers accrued 38 of their 74 points in the paint while the Mids tallied 26 of their 65 points in the paint.
Navy held a 16-13 lead in offensive rebounds, but Boston totaled 18 second-chance points and the Mids had 16 second-chance points.
"Boston is the best team in the country at keeping people off the offensive glass," said DeChellis. "We had 16 offensive rebounds today. I am really proud of the guys for that. They were really determined. We had a goal of getting 10 offensive rebounds and we ended up with 16. Just couldn't turn them into more points. The guys played hard; they are still fighting. I am proud of them. They have great spirit. We are going to grow and get better from this."
Austin Benigni paced the Mids with 19 points,
Mike Woods scored 12 points and
Lysander Rehnstrom scored 12 points.
Navy will play its sixth road game in a span of nine games Wednesday at Loyola.
