Navy Squash Drops Hard-Fought Summers Cup Championship Match

The 22nd-ranked Navy squash team (15-15) came up just shy of winning the program's second Summers Cup in the last three years, as the Mids were tripped up by top-seeded and 21st-ranked Hobart (11-8) 5-4 in the championship match at the College Squash Association Divisional Team Championships Sunday afternoon at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. The Mids earned their place in the finals by way of a 7-2 victory over seventh-seeded Denison (10-9) in the quarterfinals on Friday and a 6-3 win over third-seeded St. Lawrence (11-11) in Saturday's semifinals.

Weekend Highlights
• Navy opened the tournament with a 7-2 win over Denison Friday afternoon and featured wins in 6 of the first 7 matches
• Alexander Orr (So / #4 / Haverford, Pa.) picked up his first of two wins on the weekend by sweeping Lucas Piller (11-7, 11-2, 11-2) to give the Mids an early 1-0 lead
• Matthew Kang (Fr / #5 / Malvern, Pa.), one of five players on Navy's roster making their CSA Divisional Team Championship debut, sealed the team victory by the Midshipmen with a 3-0 win over Ross Falcon (11-9, 11-5, 11-3)
• The match of the day, however, was at #1 and featured Navy's Matt Wang (Jr / Malvern, Pa.) vs. Denison's Juan Felipe Hernandez ... Hernandez jumped out to a 2-0 lead and looked to be in control of the match when Wang rallied to take game 3 by a 17-15 count ... Wang won game 4, 11-9, pushing the match to a fifth game ... after more than an hour battle, Wang came out the victor with an 11-9 game 5 victory

• On Saturday, the Mids captured a 6-3 victory over St. Lawrence to secure a spot in the championship match
• Team captain Henry Sparkman (Sr / #2 / Darien, Conn.) provided Navy with its first win of the day, scoring a 3-0 victory over Alexander Scott (11-7, 11-4, 11-6)
• St. Lawrence evened the match when Athrva Yadav took a 3-0 decision over Navy's Holden Woodward (Fr / #9 / Richmond, Va.) (11-7, 11-2, 11-1)
• Sparked by a Tighe Mullarkey (Fr, So / #6 / Locust Valley, N.Y.) win, the Mids would go on a 4-0 run to secure the team victory ... Mullarkey found himself down 2-0 against St. Lawrence's Patrick Walford, but began his rally with an 11-2 rout in the third ... he went to take takes 4 (11-5) and 5 (11-8) to trigger the Navy run
• Sean Wu (Fr / #7 / Princeton, N.J.), one of three Navy players to go undefeated on the weekend, sealed the team victory for the Mids with his come-from-behind win over Vladimir Iglesias ... Wu won the opening game 12-120, but Iglesias pulled ahead with back-to-back victories (11-8, 11-3) ... Wu leveled the match with an 11-6 win in the fourth and won a see-saw battle in the fifth, 13-11, to capture the victory

• Navy, who fell to Hobart 7-2 during the regular season, put together a hard-fought match in the finals where they would lose 5-4
• Kang and Wu provided Navy an early 2-1 lead after the first shift, but Hobart battled back to even the score 3-3 after the second group
• Mullarkey earned a win in the final shift, while Woodward dropped his match, setting up the final match of the day between Sparkman and Hobart's Dhirren Rajarathinam ... Sparkman put every ounce into his match against Rajarathinam, who swept him during the regular-season matchup ... Rajarathinam outlasted his Navy counterpart in the opening game, 12-10, and pushed his lead to 2-0 with an 11-5 win in the second ... Sparkman pushed the match to a fourth game, as he took an 11-9 victory in the third ... Rajarathinam, however, would close out the win with an 11-7 victory in the fourth

• Navy closes out the team portion of its schedule with a 15-15 record and a 22nd-place finish in the rankings
