Women’s Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader to End Orlando Trip

Navy Defeats Marist, 4-0, Before Ending Spring Break Trip with a 7-0 Win over Marquette

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Navy women's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip on Wednesday with a pair of wins, defeating Marist (2-12) by a 4-0 score in the afternoon before earning a 7-0 evening victory over Marquette (3-13) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
 
The doubleheader sweep extended the Midshipmen's winning streak to three matches as it heads into Patriot League play next week.

The Mids were able to claim the doubles point, as junior Emily Tannenbaum and freshman Olivia Fermo beat the top Marist pairing of Caterina Assi and Cloe Clements Sorde, 6-2, while junior Kate Lee and rookie Makaila Cheng teamed up in the No. 2 spot for a 6-2 win over Andriana Zaphiris and Ellen Zureick. The Red Foxes did avoid the sweep, as No. 3 duo Jane Wright and Devon De Sanctis upended freshmen Manci Pal and Carly Mew in a 6-3 battle.
 
Playing to clinch the match in singles, Navy quickly closed out the win when senior captain Stella Ribaudo beat Wright (6-1, 6-3) on the No. 4 court, Pal knocked off Isabella Tonuzi by a 6-1, 6-1 score at the No. 6 spot and senior Samantha Johns earned the 6-1, 6-3 victory on the top court over Clements Sorde.

Navy had to battle back for the first point against Marquette, as the Golden Eagles' No. 3 pairing Tiera Jarmond and Emilija Kojcic knocked off junior Sylvia Eklund and freshman Anna Jordaan, 6-3, to begin the evening, but the junior duo of Kate Lee and Parvathi Shanker answered back with a 6-3 win on the No. 2 court against Tiana Windbuchler and Emma Davis. Securing the double point for the Mids was Johns and sophomore Sia Chaudry with a 6-4 victory against the top Marquette team in Andie Weise and Lara Kaiser.
 
Tannenbaum added to the Navy lead in singles play, posting a 6-0, 6-2 win on the top court against Kojcic while Cheng was able to beat Weise, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position to put Navy on the verge of clinching. Getting the match-clinching victory was Jordaan at No. 3 singles, defeating Sarah Badawi, 6-3, 6-2, and Chaudry tacked on her own over Davis, 6-3, 6-4. Closing out the singles sweep were Fermo in the No. 5 spot against Kaiser, 6-4, 1-6, 10-4, and Julia Lee in the No. 6 positions over Jarmond, 4-6, 6-2, 10-2.
 
Match Notes
• Navy is now 2-0 in the all-time series with Marist.
• The Mids moved to 1-0 all-time against Marquette.
• Tannenbaum is now tied with Erin Snook for fifth in program history with 61 career doubles wins.
• Fermo and Chaudry have both won their last three singles matches.
