Men’s Tennis Drops League Opener to Terriers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Boston University (13-7, 1-0) rallied after losing the doubles point to defeat the Navy (18-11, 0-1) men's tennis team, 4-2, Sunday morning in the Patriot League opener for both teams at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

Navy's scheduled second match of the day against St. John's was canceled late Saturday night.

The teams began the morning by playing three close doubles matches.  The Mids would win the doubles point thanks to victories at the first and second flights.  Navy's No. 2 team of Aniketh Ayinala and J.J. Etterbeek posted a 6-4 victory over Jakob Esterowitz and Johann Sajonz in the first match to finish.  The Mids secured the point when their No. 1 team of Luke Garner and Sasha Panyan defeated Alejandro Licea and Jose Robalino by the score of 7-5.

In the remaining match at No. 3 doubles, Boston's Jonah Dickson and Adrian Pawlowski held a 6-5 lead on Jason Kim and Steve Nguyen.

The Terriers responded by winning the first set in five of the six singles matches.  Three of the matches featured first-set tiebreakers, with Boston winning two of those frames.

The Terriers tied the match when Corey Craig defeated Panyan, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 flight.  It became a 2-1 Boston advantage following a No. 3 win of 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 by Licea over Etterbeek.

Nguyen, who was the lone Mid to win his first set in singles, tied the score at 2-2 when he defeated Dion Loutas, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, at No. 4 singles.  The Terriers regained the lead (3-2) as Ben Letzer beat Jake Young, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 6 slot.  Boston won the match with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win by Gustavas Dambins over Ayinala at No. 5 singles.

The No. 2 singles match between Navy's Garner and Boston's Esterowitz was left unfinished with Esterowitz leading, 6-3, 4-6, 3-1.

Boston's lineup included only two players who played both doubles and singles while Navy's featured five Mids who played two matches.

Navy will continue its Patriot League slate Saturday with matches at both Lafayette and Lehigh.
