GRASONVILLE, Md. – Led by freshman
Keira Howard's own third-place finish, the Navy women's golf team wrapped up the JEL Intercollegiate at Prospect Bay by claiming third place in the team standings Sunday afternoon in Grasonville, Md.
Playing at the par-72, 6,048-yard Prospect Bay Country Club, the Midshipmen posted a team score of 69-over par-933 over the two-day, three-round tournament to comfortably place third on the team leaderboard. Shooting rounds of 314 and 315 on Saturday, Navy responded with its best 18-hole score of the weekend by registering a 304 in Sunday's final round.
Sacred Heart swept tournament honors, as the Pioneers posted an event-winning team score of 27-over par 891 while SHU's Chantal El Chaib claimed individual medalist honors at 4-under par 212.
Howard ended the weekend as Navy's top golfer by notching rounds of 77, 75 and 74 to wind up in a tie for third with Sacred Heart's Kailee Welch at 10-over par 226. Senior captain
Mara Hirtle also posted a top-10 finish, as her scores of 79-76-78 gave her a 17-over par 233 that tied her for 10th place.
Fellow senior
Stephanie Lee was not far behind after rebounding on Sunday, tying for 16th with a tournament score of 20-over par 236 (80-82-74), while sophomore
Sue Lee tied for 20th by shooting 26-over par 242 (78-84-80). Also rebounding after a difficult Saturday, rookie
Emma Tang recorded a 29-over par 245 (85-82-78) to earn a tie for 26th place, and sophomore
Hallie Brisco rounded out the navy lineup by placing 42nd at 37-over par 253 (83-90-80).
Navy is back on the course next Saturday, April 6, facing Delaware in a match-play event at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.
