ANNAPOLIS, Md. --
Sasha Panyan and
Herrick Legaspi won straight-set singles matches after each had a hand in Navy winning the doubles point to lead the Mids (16-8) to a 4-0 victory over Temple (5-7), Friday evening at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The win over the Owls followed a 4-0 loss by the Mids to No. 62 NJIT (11-1) earlier in the day.
Saturday Schedule Changes
There are slight changes to each of Navy's two matches scheduled for Saturday. The Navy at Norfolk State match will now start at 11:30 a.m. and be played at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club. Navy's match at William & Mary will now start at 3 p.m.
#62 NJIT 4, Navy 0
The Highlanders posted wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to win the lone point. The match at the No. 3 flight had a final score of 7-5, and the Mids were leading, 5-4, at No. 2 doubles when it was halted due to the point being decided.
NJIT went on to win straight-set singles matches at the Nos. 1, 2 and 6 flights to win the match. Navy led at Nos. 4 and 5 singles and was tied at No. 3 singles in the matches that were left unfinished.
Navy 4, Temple 0
Temple's No. 3 doubles team of Pranav Nemani and Dante Russo recorded a 6-2 win over
Jason Kim and
Steve Nguyen in the first match to finish. Panyan teamed with
Luke Garner for a 6-2 victory against Aayush Bhat and Paul Hannack at the No. 1 flight, which left the No. 2 match to decide the point. Legaspi and
Nathan Nguyen combined for a 6-4 win over Gregoire Barety and Adam Kesina to give Navy the 1-0 lead.
Legaspi made the score 2-0 when he defeated Martin Marujo, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Panyan followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Russo at the No. 1 flight. Kim closed out play when he defeated Maj Najvirt Kolaric, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
The Mids led in two matches that were halted and the Owls led in one match.
Temple had defeated Navy by the score of 4-3 in both 2022 and '23.
