Baseball Sweeps Lehigh in Offense-Packed Senior Day

Grenn Tosses Complete Game in Opener While Murtha Tallies Eight RBIs in Doubleheader

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy baseball team (23-16, 13-8 PL) used a complete effort on Senior Day to pick a doubleheader sweep over Lehigh (19-18-1, 6-11 PL), posting 12-2 and 10-4 victories to earn the Patriot League series win Saturday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

Led by sophomore Tyler Grenn's complete-game outing and a career-high six RBI from fellow sophomore Brock Murtha in the opener, the Midshipmen then got five strong innings of relief from senior Nolan Jorgenson in the nightcap that were backed by three-RBI contests from freshman Jack Killelea and senior Anthony Fiallo.

Game One Recap
Navy got off hot in the first game, as senior Zane Raba's leadoff single in the first inning set the stage for Murtha, who blasted a one-out, opposite-field home run to put the Mids up, 2-0.

With Grenn and Lehigh starter Cole Leaman dueling for the next three frames, the Mids struck again in the fifth inning with four more runs, as Raba singled home fellow senior Eduardo Diaz and Murtha scored fellow sophomore Mac McCommons on a sacrifice fly before classmate Victor Izquierdo doubled in Raba and senior Hudson Lehnertz with a ball down the third-base line.

Another big frame in the sixth saw Navy score six times, as a pair of singles were followed by McCommons' bunt single that brought in freshman Andrew Manning, while another bunt from Raba scored Diaz. Murtha then doubled with the bases loaded, driving in all three runners before scoring himself on a double by senior Logan Keller.

Going back out for the seventh, Lehigh finally got to Grenn in the final inning as a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Jake Whitlinger and an RBI single from Ryan Cochran broke the shutout, but Grenn fanned Rafe Perich to pick up the first complete game of his college career.

Grenn finished the start with two runs allowed on eight hits, picking up six strikeouts to three walks in his fifth win of the season and racking up 123 pitches.

Leaman ended up with the loss after giving up six runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings, while Tyler Thompson pitched the final inning for Lehigh and allowed six more runs (four earned) on five hits.

Game Two Recap
After both teams went down scoreless over the first two innings, Lehigh opened the scoring in the nightcap when a three-run third inning was started by back-to-back walks and an RBI single from Perich, while a fielder's choice and Raffaele Rogers single with two outs later in the frame added two more runs to the scoreboard. Navy answered back defensively in the fourth, as Murtha made a ranging play at second base and lasered a throw to Izquierdo for the second out, while Fiallo made a superman-like dive two pitches later in left field to end the inning.

Held hitless until the fifth inning by Teddy Tolliver, the Mids finally broke through when Manning walked and Diaz singled to put two on for Killelea, who hit his first collegiate homer out to right field to bring the game even at 3-3. Fiallo. A hit-by-pitch and two walks then loaded the bases with two outs for Fiallo's bases-clearing double off the wall in the sixth, handing Navy a 6-3 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Cochran and Perich to start the seventh plated the fourth Lehigh run before Jorgenson got three outs to avoid further damage, and Navy responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame when Diaz worked a bases-loaded walk to score Murtha.

Murtha swelled the lead to 9-4 in the eighth when he looped a triple down the right-field line to plate Fiallo and Raba, coming in himself on an Izquierdo sacrifice fly to make it 10-4. Junior closer Landon Kruer and freshman Evan Foster then combined to close out the Mountain Hawks in the ninth, securing the series win over Lehigh.

Senior starter Matthew Shirah went three innings for Navy, allowing three runs on four walks despite four strikeouts, while Jorgenson notched the win by holding Lehigh to one run on four hits in his five frames out of the bullpen, while Kruer got two outs in the ninth before Foster retired Tyler Young to end the game.

Tolliver got the loss after allowing five runs on three hits over 5.1 innings, as Brandon Coughlin followed with two runs allowed over one frame before David Andolina (two runs) and Shane O'Neill (one run) both lasted 0.2 innings, while Joe Ingino got the final out for Lehigh.
