EMMITSBURG, Md. – Bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, the Navy baseball team (24-17) could not pull off the dramatic comeback against Mount St. Mary's (8-28-1), falling by a 10-6 score Tuesday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
Led by senior
Logan Keller driving out his team-leading fifth home run of the campaign, Navy had seven different Midshipmen collect a hit, but a three-hit, three-RBI game from the Mountaineers' Scott Seeker paced a Mount offense that posted nine extra-base hits to break the Mids' three-game win streak.
The Mountaineers took control of the game early, as back-to-back doubles to start the first inning from Tyler Long and Seeker brought Long around to score and a Jayson Kramer single later drove in Seeker to make it 2-0, while a Seeker sacrifice fly and a JT Landwehr RBI double made it another two-run frame in the second.
Navy clawed back a run in the third when freshman
Jack Killelea doubled to lead off the inning, while a wild pitch and fellow rookie
Evan Brown's single helped him come across for the Mids' first run of the game, but a two-run shot from David Stirpe in the bottom of the frame swelled the Mount's lead to 6-1.
Navy continued to chip away in the fourth inning when Keller lined a one-out solo shot over the left-field fence, while an error later in the frame allowed
Andrew Manning to come home and cut the deficit to 6-3. Evan Meier then made it 8-3 in the fifth when he drove in Stirpe on a double and came in to score himself on a Navy throwing error later on when he stole third base.
Loading the bases with no outs in the sixth, Navy finally cashed in when senior
Hudson Lehnertz singled up the middle to bring in Manning and senior
Eduardo Diaz, but a Shane Wockley solo homer in the seventh pushed the margin to 9-5 and a Seeker homer in the eighth made it 10-5. Filling the bases again in the ninth with no outs, Keller drove in another run in on a groundout, while a Manning walk re-loaded the bases before a leaping Stirpe took away a base-hit from Diaz and quickly doubled off a Navy runner to close out the game.
With sophomore
Brock Murtha going 1.1 innings in the start, allowing four runs and suffering the loss, the Mids then saw sophomore
Jackson Beattie record two frames before freshmen
Timmy Virtudes,
Ryan Bibb and
Aidan Healy combined to pitch the final 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Allowing just two earned runs in a four-inning start, Jakob Foster struck out five to earn the win, while Evan Haulik went one inning and allowed two runs before Jackson Snyder pitched three scoreless frames and Brendan Yagesh surrendered an unearned run in his inning of work.
