ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team earned a pair of major awards on Tuesday, as senior
Samantha Johns and sophomore
Sia Chaudry were named the 2024 Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year while head coach
Keith Puryear was selected as the league's Coach of the Year, the league office announced.
Capturing the program's first Patriot League Championship just over a week ago and earning a berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, the Midshipmen also garnered three all-league accolades as Johns and junior
Emily Tannenbaum were picked to the All-Patriot League First Team and Chaudry received a nod to the All-Patriot League Second Team.
Johns and Chaudry become the first pairing in program history to claim Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year, while Puryear recorded his second Patriot League Coach of the Year award and his 11th overall conference coach-of-the-year honor in his storied career. The All-Patriot League honors mark Tannenbaum's third-straight season earning first-team all-league distinction and Chaudry's second-consecutive year making the all-league second team, while Johns notched all-league laurels for the first time in her career.
As a pairing, Johns and Chaudry posted a 15-10 overall record that included a 10-5 mark at the No. 1 spot in the spring season while also going 3-0 over their last four matches. Earning wins at Richmond and Delaware, the duo also notched wins against the top pairing for then-No. 60 Liberty and Marquette. Being an integral part of the team's run to a Patriot League title, Johns and Chaudry earned a win at No. 1 doubles over Boston in the league regular-season finale before taking down Army's top team in the semifinals and defeating the Terriers once again in the league's championship match.
Now holding a 298-100 record in 15 years at Navy, Puryear captured his first league title with the Mids after delivering his 10th 20-win season with the program he started in 2009. Posting an incredible 21-1 home record, Puryear's squad grinded through a spring schedule that included three ranked opponents and saw Puryear win his 500th match as a women's head coach. The Mids also saw several individual records fall and had five different players earn at least 12 singles wins in dual season, as Navy posted a .702 singles winning percentage and .671 doubles winning percentage over their 30 spring matches. The spring of 2024 also saw another significant milestone for Puryear, as his team defeated Army twice in the same season for the first time in program history and delivered its third-straight Star Match victory.
Tannenbaum collected All-Patriot League First Team selection for the third-straight season after breaking four program records while tallying a prolific 18-2 dual singles mark and a perfect 9-0 combined record in league action. Shattering the previous single-season overall singles wins (33) and career No. 1 singles wins (36) records, the junior also reset a pair of her own program single-season records, tallying 18 victories at the No. 1 singles spot and registering 55 combined wins over the course of the campaign. She also put herself on the precipice of another school record when her 13-match singles winning streak from Oct. 27 to March 7 tied for second in program history. Tannenbaum also went 22-10 in overall doubles play, tallying a spring mark of 14-4 and going 5-0 in league doubles action. This included a 10-3 record alongside fellow New Yorker and rookie
Olivia Fermo and a perfect 3-0 mark next to freshman
Julia Lee.
Johns was almost as outstanding as Tannenbaum, going 26-12 overall in singles play. Highlighted by a 17-6 mark for her dual single slate, Johns' 26 singles wins stand fifth in program history and included an 11-4 record at her primary spot of No. 2 singles. Claiming 13 of her final 15 regular-season singles battles, the senior racked up a 4-1 record in Patriot League play and was one of the winning points in Navy's third-straight Star Match victory over rival Army. In doubles play, Johns posted an overall record of 21-13 that included a 12-7 mark in the spring. Her 47 combined victories in 2023-24 sit fourth in program history as well.
Getting the Second-Team All-Patriot League nod in back-to-back seasons, Chaudry continued to build her own legacy with a 24-9 singles record that tied her freshman-year total for victories, also adding on an overall doubles mark of 18-11. Playing across the Mids' top three singles positions, Chaudry won 12 of her first 14 singles matches in the spring season and finished with a 3-2 league record before winning her singles matches in both the Patriot League semifinals and finals, including being the tying point in the Mids' comeback win in the championship match.
Puryear's squad continues their season on Friday when it plays No. 4 North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
