Women’s Tennis Travels to Boston for Showdown with Terriers

Navy and Boston University Battling for First Place in the Patriot League

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A week after defeating rival Army in the Star Match to remain undefeated in the Patriot League, the Navy women's tennis team (20-5, 4-0 PL) heads to Beantown on Saturday evening for a showdown with defending league champion Boston University (10-7, 2-0 PL).

The last league match of the regular season for Navy, Saturday's contest between the Midshipmen and Terriers is slated to start at 5 p.m. from the Winchester Tennis Club in Winchester, Mass.

Tannenbaum Named PL Player of the Week for Fifth Time
For the fifth time this season, Tannenbaum was named the Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday … Capturing weekly league honors for the eighth time in her career, Tannenbaum was crucial in the Mids' Star Match victory over Army by claiming both her doubles and singles matches … First, Tannenbaum and freshman Julia Lee teamed up at No. 3 doubles to cruise to a 6-1 win over the Black Knights' Isabella Brilliant and Paulina Feoli, before the junior then worked a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Cooper Jackson on the No. 1 singles court to give Navy its first point of the day.

Puryear Reaches Another Milestone
Just weeks after achieving one milestone, head coach Keith Puryear reached another career milestone with the March 2 win over Drexel … After notching his 200th home win with the Mids on Feb. 17, Puryear earned his 500th victory as a women's head coach by defeating Drexel, as he collected 215 wins as the UMBC women's coach and now has 294 victories at Navy … Including his time as UMBC's men's coach, Puryear now has 737 career coaching wins.

Tannenbaum Chasing Records
Tannenbaum has been near-dominant this spring, posting a 17-1 singles record in dual matches … Already this spring, the junior has reset the program record for single-season singles wins (31) and career No. 1 singles victories (35) … Now sitting alone at third in program history with 81 career singles wins, Tannenbaum needs five more to catch Amanda Keller for second … Sitting third in program history with 149 career combined wins as well, Tannenbaum needs two more to catch Erin Snook for second … Ranking fourth in program history with 65 career doubles wins, Tannenbaum needs three more doubles victories to catch Claudia Mackenzie for third in the record books.

Last Time Out
The Star Match saw Navy rally in singles play to defeat Army, 4-2, in Annapolis … The Black Knights captured the doubles point despite Tannenbaum and Lee winning on the third court to open the day … The Mids battled back with Tannenbaum and senior Samantha Johns both claiming the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches in two sets, while junior Parvathi Shanker's three-set victory on the No. 6 court put Navy on the verge of clinching before Army's No. 3 player Ylan Duong defeated sophomore Sia Chaudry to keep the Black Knights alive … After a pair of close sets, junior Kate Lee rallied in the third set to knock off Emma Sy in the No. 4 spot and lock up the star for Navy … Navy has now won three-straight and five of the last six Star Matches.

Scouting Boston
Undefeated in league play so far, the Terriers picked up a 7-0 win over Bucknell on Jan. 20 before claiming a 4-0 victory against Holy Cross last Saturday … Following the match against the Mids, Boston will close out its regular season with contests against Army and Lehigh in West Point next weekend … Kaitlin Tan paces the team with 16 singles wins this season and a 6-3 mark in the spring duals, while the top doubles pairing has been Victoria Carlsten and Nina Gulbransen with a 5-2 dual record … 2023 All-Patriot League First Team pick Michelle Kleynerman returns for the Terriers alongside 2023 All-PL Second-Teamers in Tan and Carlsten and the league's 2023 Rookie of the Year, Emily Zhao.
