ANNAPOLIS, Md.— The Naval Academy Athletic Association announced its major athletic award winners this afternoon with
Jackson Bonitz of the lacrosse team winning the NAAA Sword for Men,
Annie Taylor from the track & field team winning the Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women and
Emily Tannenbaum from the women's tennis team winning the Thompson Trophy Cup.
Richie Trentalange from the men's swimming & diving team and
McKenna Brophy of the women's cross country / track & field team won the Coaches' Calvert Awards.
The
NAAA Sword for Men is presented to that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics during his years of varsity competition.
Widely regarded as one of the top defensemen in the country, Bonitz was a three-time USILA, Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse All-American. He is only the 35th player in the program's 117-year history to garner USILA All-America honors three times and the first since Chris Fennell, who earned the honor in 2015, '16 and '17. Additionally, Bonitz became only the second Navy player and the 15th player among all schools to earn All-Patriot League honors four times. He was named to the second team as a freshman before garnering first-team accolades his final three seasons. He is one of eight Navy players to be a first-team selection three times.
A starter in every game in which he played (55) over his four years, Bonitz closed out his career ranked second on the Mids' all-time caused turnovers list with 79. He joins three-time All-Patriot League long-stick midfielder Matt Rees as the only two players in school history to reach 70 caused turnovers in a career, while they are also the only two players to have their name appear three times on Navy's single-season caused turnovers leader board. Bonitz recorded 18 caused turnovers in 2022, posted 22 last spring and led the team with 29 this season which is tied for the third most at Navy. Bonitz also ranked among Navy's all-time leaders in ground balls, amassing 157 which ranks 13th on the Mids' career list.
A threat in the transition game, Bonitz produced 12 points over his career, scoring six goals and adding six assists. He finished his four years tied for fourth all-time among Navy's defensemen (close defense / long stick midfielders) in career points and stands alone in sixth in career goals. This spring, he scored three goals for the Mids and added three assists.
Bonitz has drawn the opponent's top offensive player in each of his four years and guided a defensive unit that was ranked among the nation's top 12 in scoring defense in each of his first three seasons, while this spring (10.75) the Mids were #1 in the Patriot League and 24th nationally. The Mids held seven of their 16 foes this spring to single digits, including nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins who scored just three goals over the final 48 minutes in a 10-9 overtime loss to Navy.
Bonitz, who was elected by his peers to serve as the Captain of the Captains during the 2023-24 academic year, is the first men's lacrosse player to win the Sword since Chris Fennell in 2017 and the 24
th men's lacrosse player overall to win the Sword, which was first awarded in 1893.
The
Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women is presented to that woman of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in women's athletics during her years of varsity competition.
Taylor won five Patriot League Championships in her career finishing first in the indoor pentathlon in 2023 and 2024, first in the outdoor heptathlon in 2023 and 2024 and first in the indoor distance medley relay in 2022.
Taylor is a two-time Patriot League Track & Field Outdoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2023 and 2024) as well as being named Academic All-Patriot League for both indoor and outdoor in 2023 and 2024. She is a two-time College Sports Communicators All-District recipient (2022 and 2023) and is a lock to be named all-district when the voting is completed in June for 2024. Taylor also has a strong case to be named an Academic All-American in June.
Taylor will graduate on Friday with a 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in mathematics. She earned Superintendent's List honors at Navy in all eight semesters and was ranked No. 5 in overall order of merit out of a class of 1,061 students.
Taylor is the 13
th track & field athlete to win the award in the 45 years (1980 was the first year) that it has been presented and is the third-straight track & field athlete to be honored joining Katie Halbert (2022) and
Molly Mangan (2023).
The
Thompson Trophy Cup is presented to that midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy.
Tannenbaum was an All-Patriot League First Team selection for the third-straight season after breaking four program records while tallying a prolific 18-3 dual singles mark and a perfect 9-0 combined record in league action. This effort helped Navy capture its first league title in program history, as the Mids posted an incredible 21-1 home record, defeated Army twice in the same season for the first time in program history, delivered their third-straight Star Match victory and beat Boston University for the first time ever in the Patriot League Championship match.
Shattering the previous single-season overall singles wins (33) and career No. 1 singles wins (36) records, the junior also reset a pair of her own program single-season records, tallying 18 victories at the No. 1 singles spot and registering 55 combined wins over the course of the campaign. She also put herself on the precipice of another school record when her 13-match singles winning streak from Oct. 27 to March 7 tied for second in program history. Additionally, with 86 career singles wins, Tannenbaum needs three more to catch Amanda Keller for second while her 153 career combined wins are just seven shy of catching Keller for first.
Tannenbaum also went 22-10 in overall doubles play, tallying a spring mark of 14-4 and going 5-0 in league doubles action. This included a 10-3 record alongside freshman
Olivia Fermo and a perfect 3-0 mark next to freshman
Julia Lee.
Tannenbaum is the first women's tennis player to win the award in the 16 years the program has been in existence. She is the first junior to win the award since Luke Gillingham of the baseball team won it in 2015. Next year, Tannenbaum will try and become the first student-athlete to win the award twice since Keenan Reynolds (2014 and 2016) and the first student-athlete to win it in back-to-back years since David Robinson in 1986 and 1987.
The
Coaches' Calvert Award is presented to a graduating letterwinner (one male, one female) who made a significant contribution to the success of varsity athletics while a midshipman. The recipients must exemplify outstanding qualities of athletic leadership, athletic loyalty and acceptable academic efforts.

In the pool, Trentalange helped Navy win titles at the 2022, '23 and '24 ECAC Championship meets. He reached the championship final in seven individual events at those meets, which included a trio of second-place finishes. He also swam on three victorious relay teams over the course of his three championships. This includes being part of a 200 medley relay team that set a new Navy, Lejeune Hall, Patriot League and ECAC Championship record.
Trentalange is the third men's swimmer to win the Coaches' Calvert Award in its 51 years of existence and the first since Ryan Bailey in 2017.
Brophy was a four-year member of the Navy women's cross country and track & field teams that won a combined 10 Stars and nine Patriot League Team Championships (two meets were canceled due to COVID).
Individually, she was a four-time All-Patriot League honoree, claiming first-team distinction in the 4x800m indoor relay in 2023 and 2024, while earning second-team accolades during the outdoor season in the 4x800m relay in the same years.
Brophy began her Navy career primarily as a middle-distance runner, but dedicated herself to her training and eventually worked her way into the starting lineup during all six varsity cross country meets as a senior.
In the classroom, Brophy, who served as the women's cross country team's academic officer, is a Graduate with Distinction, finishing her Midshipmen career with a 3.97 GPA in ocean engineering.
Brophy was a three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection, claiming the honor twice during the indoor season (2023, '24) and once during the outdoor competition (2024). Additionally, the New Hope, Pa. native earned 2022-23 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors as a junior.
Brophy is the ninth women's cross country / track & field athlete to win the Calvert in the 45 years the award has been in existence and the first since Emily Craig in 2021.
