Ten Navy Student-Athletes Garner CSC Academic All-District Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. //  Navy water polo player Caden Capobianco (Sr / Laguna Beach, Calif.), women's lacrosse player Tori DiCarlo (Jr / Rosemont, Pa.), wrestler Grady Griess (Sr / Grand Island, Neb.), rifle athlete Clarissa Layland (Sr / Granbury, Texas), women's golfer Stephanie Lee (Sr / Southlake, Texas), men's lacrosse player Jackson Peters (Sr / Darien, Conn.), gymnast Matthew Petros (So / Broadview Heights, Ohio), women's rower Tenlea Radack (Jr / Washington, D.C.), women's rowing coxswain Maeve Swick (Sr / Annapolis, Md.) and men's golfer Benjamin Valdez (Jr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) earned Academic All-District accolades for at-large sports from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) this week. Nine of the 10 will advance to the national ballot that will determine CSC's Academic All-America Teams, which will be announced July 16 (women) and 17 (men).

To be eligible for the district ballot, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or better and reached their sophomore year academically and athletically. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in 90 percent of its respective sport's contests that season or have started in at least 66 percent of those contests.
 
The at-large sports program includes of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, men's volleyball, water polo and men's wrestling.

Caden Capobianco / Water Polo
Named to the Peter J. Cutino Award Watch List which recognizes the best player in men's and women's college water polo, Capobianco boasted a 3.86 grade-point average in ocean engineering. The Laguna Beach native finished his career as a two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-American, while earning all-conference and all-tournament distinction twice. He was a four-time member of the ACWPC All-Academic Team, while being named to the Superintendent's (2x), Commandant's (8x) and Dean's (6x) Lists. This past season, Capobianco played in 23 games, recording 237 saves with 187 goals allowed for a 55.9 save percentage. He registered 16 double-digit save performances, including six against ranked opponents and 11 against conference foes. Additionally, he finished the season with a team-high 52 steals, while adding seven assists and an ejection drawn.

Tori DiCarlo / Women's Lacrosse
DiCarlo finished her third year at the Naval Academy with a 3.99 GPA in honors oceanography. She was named 2024 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and First-Team All-Patriot League, while also being selected to the conference's all-academic team. DiCarlo's selection as Scholar-Athlete of the Year is the second in Navy women's lacrosse history (2010). The Rosemont, Pa. native has also been named to the Superintendent's (5x), Commandant's (6x) and Dean's (1x) Lists. Navy's top attacker on the year, DiCarlo finished this past season with 72 points on 58 goals and 14 assists, leading the team with 15 free-position goals and three game-winning goals. The junior scored at least one goal in 17-consecutive games with 16 multi-goal performances, including 14 hat tricks (in 19 total games).

Grady Griess / Wrestling
A two-time NCAA qualifier, Griess served as team captain for the Mids during the 2023-24 campaign. Just a year removed from winning the heavyweight title at the 2023 EIWA Championship, Griess led the Mids in victories this season with a 26-12 record, including an 8-4 mark in dual action. Additionally, he led the team in wins by fall with nine. A two-time EIWA All-Academic selection, he graduated from the Naval Academy with a 3.88 GPA with a degree in quantitative economics. He was among the top 15 percent of the graduating class Overall, Academic and Military Order of Merit (1,061 students) and garnered Commandant's (7x), Dean's (5x) and Superintendent's (3x) List honors multiple times over his four years.

Clarissa Layland / Rifle
Layland, a senior ocean engineering major with a 3.82 GPA, earned CSC Academic All-District recognition for the second time in her career. She was tabbed a Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholastic All-American four times (2021, '22, '23, '24), while being selected as Navy's Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also named to the Superintendent's (3x), Commandant's (7x) and Dean's (5x) Lists. This past season, Layland finished with a 592.9 average in air rifle, 578.7 in smallbore, and 1171.6 in aggregate. She posted a team-best score of 1179 in her final NCAA Championship. She put together back-to-back days of high scores for the Midshipmen with a 585 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle to lead the squad to a sixth-place finish.

Stephanie Lee / Women's Golf
Lee capped off an impressive career with an historic 2023-24 season, being named the 2024 Patriot League Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year while posting a 76.96 scoring average and earning a trio of top-10 finishes. Becoming the first golfer in program history to earn individual medalist honors at the Patriot League Championship, Lee helped lead Navy to its second league title and its second berth in the NCAA Regionals in four years. A three-time All-Patriot League selection, Lee earned first-team distinction in 2021 and 2024 and second-team honors in 2022. The Southlake, Texas native finished her collegiate career fourth in program history with a 77.18 scoring average. In the classroom, Lee was a three-time Academic All-Patriot League pick while posting a 3.74 GPA as an operations research major, also receiving WGCA Scholar All-American accolades in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Jackson Peters / Men's Lacrosse
A 2024 graduate of the Naval Academy, Peters earned a 3.78 cumulative GPA in operations research. He was named to the Commandant's List in six of the eight semesters in Annapolis, while also earning Dean's List (5x) and Superintendent's List (1x) recognition. He ranked among the top 21 percent of the graduating class in Overall and Academic Order of Merit (1,061 students). He was equally as impressive on the field this spring, garnering All-America recognition from the USILA (3rd team), USA Lacrosse (2nd team) and Inside Lacrosse (Honorable Mention). A two-time All-Patriot League selection (2024 First Team, 2023 Second Team), Peters led the Mids' transition game, scoring 10 goals and dealing out 4 assists. Meanwhile, the Mids' co-captain was a key part of Navy defensive units that stood among the nation's top 12 in scoring defense in each of his first three seasons, while this past spring the Mids were #1 in the Patriot League and 25th nationally.

Matthew Petros / Men's Gymnastics
One of the most skilled gymnasts in the Eastern College Athletic Conference, Petros was a three-time ECAC Gymnast of the Week this past season before dominating in the postseason with six top-two finishes at the USAG Collegiate (3) and ECAC Championships (3) out of eight combined routines. At the USAGs, he finished second for his performances on the vault, parallel bars and high bar before returning two weeks later and going top-two in the same events at the ECACs. Petros broke through on the parallel bars at the conference event and collected the league title with a career-best 14.05 score. In the classroom, he's posted a 4.00 GPA in computer engineering and sits atop the Naval Academy's Class of 2026 in Academic Order of Merit.

Tenlea Radack / Women's Rowing
A standout for the Mids in their first varsity crew, Radack competed with Navy's top boat for the second-consecutive season and led the team to a second-place finish at the 2024 Patriot League Championship this past May. A First-Team All-Patriot League honoree in 2023, Radack was selected to the Patriot League All-Academic Team for the second-straight year in recognition of her success as an athlete and a student at the Naval Academy. An honors mathematics major with a 3.98 cumulative GPA through six semesters, the Washington, D.C. native is slated to be a USNA Trident Scholar for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year.

Maeve Swick / Women's Rowing
Swick completed her second year with the women's rowing program as a coxswain with the first varsity eight crew. Previously a coxswain with the men's heavyweight team, Swick continued to thrive on the water and in the classroom as a senior this past season as she guided the Mids' V8 to a second-place finish at the 2024 Patriot League Championship and was recognized on the All-Patriot League Second Team. Academically, the Annapolis native posted a 3.82 GPA as a quantitative economics major and recently commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy. This is the second-straight year Swick has been named as a CSC Academic All-District honoree.

Benjamin Valdez / Men's Golf
Valdez owns a 3.84 grade-point average as quantitative economics major and has been recognized five times on the Commandant's List, while earning Dean's List mention four times. A member of the 2024 Academic All-Patriot League Men's Golf Team, he was also recognized last spring on the Superintendent's List. The 2023 team captain produced a 76.42 average over the nine events in which he played this past year, including the Patriot League Championship where he garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors after tying for fifth-place (76-72-73=221), just three strokes behind the individual medalist. Valdez also had a strong performance at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in late March where he turned in a 3-over par 216 (69-75-72) to post his first-collegiate top-10 finish, placing ninth among a 77-player field.
