7/24/2024 2:31:00 PM

Matt Fluhr, a 2012 graduate of the Naval Academy, has been named associate head coach for the Navy heavyweight rowing program, announced Steve Gladstone, the Tom and Candy Knudson Heavyweight Rowing Head Coach.

"I am delighted that Matt Fluhr is joining our coaching staff," said Gladstone.  "He will play a key role in the development of our oarsmen."

"I am honored to be in this role and thrilled about the opportunity to return to Annapolis, said Fluhr. "I care deeply about the Naval Academy, Navy Rowing and the Midshipmen. I can't wait to get to work and I will do whatever it takes for us to be successful."

Fluhr comes to Navy from Yale, where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the last two seasons.

Prior to Yale, Fluhr was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the heavyweight program at Navy for three years.  Fluhr helped lead the Mids to a sixth-place finish in the Ten Eyck point standings at the IRAs in 2021, with all four boats finishing in the top 10. In 2022, Navy's three boats all finished in the top 15 in the IRAs.

Fluhr's rowing career included competing with the 2007 U.S. Junior National Team in the Junior World Championships in Beijing, China. At Navy, he stroked the first varsity boat for three years and was a two-time recipient of the Rusty Callow Award, the highest honor for a Navy heavyweight rower. He served as team captain his senior year, leading the Mids' first varsity eight to a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Sprints – the best finish by a Navy first varsity boat since 2004. The Mids' first varsity finished 10th at the IRAs.

After graduating with a B.S. degree in ocean engineering, Fluhr was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer and served in the Navy for more than six years. Fluhr was a division officer with the USS Ingraham, serving as both the gunnery officer and main propulsion officer. Following his time with the USS Ingraham, he moved on to Coastal Riverine Squadron TWO as a platoon commander and seaward security officer.

Fluhr rounded out his service with an assignment at the Naval Academy. From January of 2017 to February of 2019, he was an operations officer at the sailing center and instructor in the SEANAV department. He also served as the officer rep for the heavyweight crew team and volunteered at practices when time allowed.

Fluhr's coaching experience also includes a stint as head coach at the US Rowing U19 High Performance Camp in 2021.
