ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy men's lacrosse head coach Joe Amplo announced on Monday that rising seniors
Ian McGullam (D / Centerport, N.Y.) and
Jack Norton (SSDM / Vienna, Va.) have been selected by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2024-25 academic year.
"Every year, I am consistently awestruck by the exceptional caliber of individuals elected as captains of our teams. This year is no exception," said Amplo. "Ian and Jack were recruited by our staff with a clear vision of their potential impact. We saw not just their athletic abilities, but also their innate qualities as leaders. Through unwavering commitment and resilience, both young men have positioned themselves to pursue greatness. More importantly, they have absorbed guidance, excelled as followers, mastered the art of understated leadership and evolved into exemplary figures poised at the forefront. Ian and Jack epitomize the transformational power of Navy Lacrosse for those who wholeheartedly embrace its values. I eagerly anticipate witnessing their leadership unfold on the field as captains of our team."
Both McGullam and Norton were members of Navy's defensive unit that finished the 2024 campaign ranked 24th nationally and #1 in the Patriot League in scoring defense (10.75 goals/gm). The Mids held 7 of their foes to single digits over the course of the season, including 5 of their 8 conference foes and NCAA Quarterfinalist Johns Hopkins in a 10-9 overtime victory.
In his first season as a starter at close defense, McGullam earned 14 starting nods, including 10 of the last 11 contests. The three-year letter winner recorded the third-most caused turnovers on the team with 12, while also grabbing 17 ground balls. Named to the the Patriot League All-Tournament Team, McGullam posted 2 caused turnovers against Lehigh in the semifinals and was part of a Navy defensive unit that held Loyola scoreless for nearly 23 minutes (13:03 in 3Qtr - 5:05 in 4Qtr), allowing the Mids to go on a 3-0 run and secure the quarterfinal victory over Loyola.
McGullam has also excelled in the classroom where he boasts a 3.58 cumulative grade-point average in quantitative economics. He has been named to the Commandant's List every semester (6), while also earning Superintendent's List recognition in each of the last 4 semesters. McGullam has also been selected to serve as the Naval Academy Prep School's Detail Battalion Commander this summer. In this role, he will be responsible for the development of over 250 midshipmen candidates and lead over 50 detailers.
Norton, a short-stick defensive midfielder, has appeared in 46 of the 47 games during his career at Navy and has contributed to defensive units that have never ranked lower than #2 in the Patriot League in scoring defense and have twice ranked among the top 12 nationally (#11 in 2023, #12 in 2022). Entering the 2024 season with just 4 caused turnovers, North had a breakout campaign where he finished with the second-most takeaways on the team with 14. He heads into his final season just 4 caused turnovers shy of joining the Mids' career list with
