Volleyball Can’t Slow Down Old Dominion

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Navy volleyball team closed the George Mason Invitational and its non-league slate of matches with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24) loss an Old Dominion that is now on a five-match winning streak, Saturday at Fairfax, Va.

"It certainly is not the result we wanted," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador, "but collectively we know we are just a few plays away from winning matches.  We will spend this week cleaning up the contacts on our side of the court and preparing for league play."

Set One
The teams were tied at 8-8 before the Monarchs took a slim lead.  They soon led by no more than three points on several occasions before opening up an 18-12 advantage.  Navy was able to whittle the deficit back down to three points at 20-17 and 21-18 before Old Dominion closed the set on a 4-1 run.

Set Two
After a close first half to the set, Old Dominion built a five-point lead at 15-10.  The Monarchs couldn't shake the Mids, however, as Navy drew to within two points at 15-13 and 17-15, then made it a one-point margin at 19-18 following a Hannah Hoover ace.  The teams exchanged the ensuing nine points which alternated the lead between one and two points through ODU holding a 24-22 lead.  A service ace by the Monarchs gave them the second set and the 2-0 lead.

Set Three
The score was tied at 5, 7, 9 and 10 before Old Dominion took a 13-10 lead.  Navy answered with a 5-0 run to regain a 15-13 advantage. The Monarchs tied the score at 17-17, then it was again tied at 18, 19, 20 and 21.

Old Dominion accounted for the next two points to take a 23-21 lead.  Navy quickly tied the score for the 12th time in the set at 23-23 before ODU reached match point (24-23) on a Navy service error.  The Mids extended the match on a block by the tandem of Julia Humphrey and Katie Jackowski.  A kill by the Monarchs followed by an ace ended the nearly 90-minute match.

Inside the Numbers
Old Dominion held statistical advantages in kills (45-31), hitting percentage (.216-.194) and aces (9-1).

Jackowski led the Navy offense with eight kills and zero attack errors on 18 swings for a .444 hitting percentage.  Humphrey recorded five kills and seven blocks, while Hoover grabbed eight digs.

"Katie had another outstanding match," said Labrador.  "She is really dialed in.  She was up against the toughest blockers on Old Dominion and still scored at an extremely high rate."
