ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A pair of doubles teams posted 3-0 records to highlight the efforts of the Navy men's tennis team at the season-opening Joe Hunt Invitational held this weekend in Annapolis.
Winning the navy flight with a 3-0 record was the team of
Herrick Legaspi and
Charlie Spencer. The pair lost a combined seven games in winning its three matches. Legaspi and Spencer won a 6-0 decision over Morgan State's Mikeal Carpenter and Niles Rachal, recorded a 6-3 win over Presbyterian's Pedro Cardoso and David Mamalat and tallied a 6-4 victory over the John Hopkins team of David Ardila and Dylan Blenkiron.
Also winning a trio of matches was the tandem of
George Cutone and
Luke Garner. Competing in the red flight, the duo defeated Morgan State's Makkijha Brown and Bertin Karenzi, 6-3, Norfolk State's Deniz Okyay and Jakub Solarski, 7-6 (7-5) and Allen Gong and Brian Yi from Johns Hopkins, 7-6 (7-5).
Legaspi and Garner also played well in singles as each tallied a 2-1 record to share flight titles.
Legaspi, who competed in the navy draw, won a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 decision over Ardila and posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Mamalat. Carpenter defeated Legaspi, 6-2, 6-1, to share the flight win.
Garner competed in the red flight and posted his victories over Rachal, 7-5, 6-4, and Dylan Blenkiron from John Hopkins, 7-5, 6-4. He dropped a 6-0, 6-4 match to Cardoso, who also totaled a 2-1 record on the weekend.
Navy will next compete in the Commander's-in-Chief Challenge against Air Force and Army Friday through Sunday at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va.
