No. 18 Water Polo Sweeps Three Games on Day 1 of Navy Open

Fourteen different Mids combined to score 54 goals in Navy’s three victories.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 18 Navy men's water polo team (3-0, 1-0 MAWPC) began the 2024 campaign with three victories – Salem (W, 13-9), Gannon (W, 20-8), and Mount St. Mary's (W, 21-7) – on day 1 of the Navy Open at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis. Fourteen (14) different Midshipmen found the back of the net on the day, including a dozen who notched multiple scores.

"This was a great way to start the season," head coach Luis Nicolao said at the end of the day. "We were able to come out today and come away with three victories. We were able to get a lot of people into the games, including a lot of our newcomers to give them their first taste of collegiate action. We had a lot of people contribute to our success today and we need to take this momentum into tomorrow."

Sophomore Kiefer Black picked up where he left off after his freshman season that saw him earn All-American honors. The second-year attacker led the team with nine goals, while freshman Maddox Garrahy followed with seven goals in his first day of collegiate action. Senior Michael Heller and sophomores Luka Sekulic and Billy Zech added five goals apiece with freshmen Ethan Gao and Matt Mai-Prasarnsuk notched four goals each. Freshmen Orion Erwin and Austin Kahn, along with Holden Seybold, chipped in three goals each with freshman Quinn Bartlett (2 goals), senior Henry Williams (2), freshman Jack Clark (1), and senior Tommy McKnew (1) rounding out the scoring.

At goal, junior Jack Hightower, freshman Jack Rodoni, and freshman Ryan Much each earned starts on day 1. Hightower earned the start in the first game of the year against Salem, while Rodoni earned his first collegiate start Gannon and Much took the honors against the Mount.

The Midshipmen conclude play in the 2024 Navy Open on Sunday as the Mids take on Biola (0-2) at 9:15 a.m. before ending the tournament against Occidental (1-1) at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be live streamed on YouTube with Dave McHugh on the call.
