WORCESTER, Mass. -- Joe Nugent and Caleb Kenny combined for 39 points in a 70-59 victory by Holy Cross (10-6, 2-1) over the Navy men's basketball team (5-11, 2-1), Wednesday night at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
"It wasn't our night," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "We only scored 59 points, we shot in the 30 percent range, we were 2-10 from the foul line, we don't make any threes. Defensively, we made some egregious mistakes on guys we talked about for two days. It just wasn't our best effort on either end."
Navy took an early 19-12 lead only to see Holy Cross score the next nine points to jump in front, 21-19, midway through the first half. The score would be tied at 21, 23 and 26, then Holy Cross scored the next six points to take a 32-26 lead with just under four minutes left in the frame. The Crusaders entered halftime with a 38-30 lead thanks to their shooting 6-11 (54.5%) from three-point range and 60 percent from the field overall.
Navy was only 2-13 (15.4%) from long range and made 39.4 percent of its shots.
Aidan Kehoe was 6-7 from the floor in scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the first half.
"I thought Kehoe had a really good first half," said DeChellis. "Then we had a hard time getting him the ball in the second half."
The Mids had a great start to the second half as they quickly tied the game at 40-40 three minutes into the half. The teams traded baskets (42-42), then the Crusaders went on an 11-0 run to take a 53-42 lead with just under 14 minutes still to play. Holy Cross soon would build a 15-point lead at 63-48 with a little more than seven minutes showing on the clock. It would be a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Navy ended the game shooting 39.7 percent from the floor and was only 7-28 (25%) from three-point range. Kehoe finished the game 9-11 from the floor to total 18 points and 14 rebounds and post a double-double in the fourth game in a row.
Donovan Draper just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
"Our inability to make baskets by our wings hurt us," said DeChellis. "You have to be able to score more than 59 points. Disappointing for us for sure."
Holy Cross shot 53.7 percent from the field and was 10-20 (50%) from beyond the arc. Nugent was 5-8 from three-point range as part of an 8-13 shooting effort in scoring 21 points. Kenney was 9-12 from the floor and scored 18 points.
Navy will play Saturday at Loyola.
