ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army and Navy men's golf teams completed the first day of action in the annual Star Match, which is part of the overall Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA, with the two teams tied 2-2 following Saturday's four-ball matches played at the Naval Academy Golf Club. The two teams will return to the links on Sunday with seven singles matches on tap to begin at 9:00 a.m. The first team to six points will be declared the winner.
Navy secured the opening point in the match with
Hudson Mitchell (Fr. / Pensacola, Fla.) and
Ed Scott (So. / Lemont, Ill.) pairing up to defeat the Black Knights' Drew Jeffords and Grant Paolucci, 5&4. The win was the first four-ball victory in the Star Match for both Mitchell and Scott. Scott dropped a 7&6 decision last season as a freshman to a two-man team that included Jeffords.
Army evened the match when Griffin Garvin and William Huang teamed up to edge Navy's
Danny Auffant (Jr. / Bellevue, Wash.) and
Luke Lombardo (Jr. / Severna Park, Md.), 3&2.
The Black Knights took a 2-1 advantage in the match. Army's Rob Ferris and Matthew Duke won the 16th hole to go up by one over the Mids'
Jack Tarzy (Sr. / Medford, N.J.) and
Sebastian Alonzo (Fr. / Azusa, Calif.). The two pairings matched one another on the final two holes, giving Ferris and Duke the point, 1-up.
The Midshipmen locked the match at 2-2 thanks to some late heroics by seniors
Chip Deegan (Sr. / Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Derek Weaver (Sr. / Hackettstown, N.J.). Trailing by one to Army's Tyson Sparks and Ryan Lopez heading to the 17th hole, Weaver squared up the four-ball match with a 35-foot birdie to win the hole. On the 18th hole, Deegan drained a six-foot par putt to give Navy the hole, 1-up, tying the overall Star Match through the first day of competition.
