Men’s Soccer Upended in Army-Navy Cup XIV

Mids and Black Knights Play in Front of Record-Setting Crowd of 11,363

CHESTER, Pa. – Three second-half goals cemented Army's 4-0 win over the Navy men's soccer team Friday night, earning the right to sing second for Army-Navy Cup XIV at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa.

Playing in front of 11,363 fans, the largest crowd in the event's 14-year history, the Black Knights (4-4-4, 2-2-1 Patriot League) used goals from Jack Kryger and Riley Cullum and Jubril Bamgbala's brace to down the Midshipmen (3-6-4, 0-4-1 Patriot League), despite the best efforts of the Mids' senior goalkeeper Robert Eaton in an eight-save evening.

Army came out controlling the possession in the opening minutes, with Bamgbala heading a ball high at 2' and Owen Ennis getting the first shot on goal of the game in the 12th minute, but Eaton was able to make his first save of the night on Ennis' chance.

Continuing the pressure, Kryger headed a Jack Meyer cross over Eaton into the right corner after a Navy turnover at 15' to open the scoring. The Black Knights nearly added to the lead a short time later at 17', but junior Alex Galloway was able to kick away a Bamgbala shot right before it went over the goal line.

Navy got its first offensive chance of the contest in the 21st minute when senior A.J. Schuetz winded up but had his shot blocked in traffic while sophomore Keane Brown sent an ensuing opportunity left of the cage seconds later.

With Eaton denying Bamgbala on a deflected shot inside the box at 22', he then swallowed up Jack De Simone's long-range effort on a bouncing ball in the 29th minute and dove to deny Cullum's shot off a cross at 37' to keep the deficit at 1-0. Freshman Nick Gallucci tried to even the score when he turned on a shot at 38' just outside the goal box, but the shot was blocked and retained by Army.

Coming out of the half, Eric Lusskin fired a long-range chance off the crossbar at 48', but Cullum capitalized in the 58th minute when a counterattack off a Navy goal kick allowed him to race past the Mids and laser a shot inside the far post for the 2-0 lead.

Another Eaton save at 65' on Miles Hadley was followed by a stop on Meyer in the 71st minute, but Bamgbala headed in the deflection to expand the lead to 3-0. Bamgbala then got a tap-in chance when a Navy clarence off a defender found him in the goal box, giving his second goal in under a minute.

Eaton had to stop Daniel Gormley at 85', while a final Navy push saw another Schuetz's 86th-minute attempt go wide and freshman Yul Hong's shot at 89' get blocked before senior Andrew Schug put a chance on goal in the game's waning seconds, forcing a save from Michael Guiry to preserve the shutout.

Head Coach Tim O'Donohue Comments
"It was a disappointing night on every level. We were chasing the game from the start after their first goal. We have to regroup and get ready for Lafayette."
