PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. // The Navy men's golf team shot a 26-over par 602 (298-304) to place 16th at the Florida Atlantic Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at the par-72 Panther National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The tournament, Navy's final competition of the fall season, was shortened from 54 to 36 holes after teams were unable to get the first two rounds in on Monday.
Chip Deegan (Sr / Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Sebastian Alonzo (Fr / Azusa, Calif.) paced the Mids with a 4-over par 148 to tie for 49th. Deegan shot par, Navy's low round of the tournament, over the second 18 holes, while Alonzo finished the opening round with a 1-over par 73.
Team captain
Jack Tarzy (Sr / Medford, N.J.) placed 68th with an 8-over par 152 (7379), followed by
Ed Scott (So / Lemont, Ill.) in 78th with a 10-over par 154 (76-78) and
Hudson Mitchell (Fr / Pensacola, Fla.) in 82nd with a 13-over par 157 (77-80).
Tarleton State was the class of the field, winning the FAU Invitational by 8 strokes over USF. The Texans turned in an 18-under par 558 that feature a 12-under par opening round. Meanwhile, USF finished in second with a 10-under par 566 (281-285), followed by North Alabama (574, -2), Abilene Christian (576, E), Jacksonville (578, +2) and Stetson (578, +2) to round out the top 5.
North Alabama's Andrew Ferworn took individual medalist honors with his 8-under par 136 that featured a 5-under par 67 in the second round. He edged out Samford's Gavin Isbell who covered the tournament with a 7-under par 137 and was unable to hold on to the lead after his opening-round 67.
